its supposed to represent that the earth has more polar ice than when is supposedly peaked in 1979 according to Real Science magazine, however I can't the original source for the photo.

OK. So the snow cover is meaningless. That site says its only shown for recent dates, not historical ones.

As for the sea ice, there is more sea ice in the 1979 picture than the 2012 picture if you look at the where the borders of the purple area are in relation to each other.

The first image doesnt depict snow cover because they dont have the data, its only white where there are glaciers. The sea ice, purple areas, were larger in 1979.
