Shag is a horrible movie that I hope none of you ever have to watch, but Phoebe Cates looks good in it...

Today, Ms. Cates is probably 300 lbs. and riding a scooter around Walmart.

When I think of that Shag movie, it reminds me of that truly horrible movie Where the Boys Are '84 with Lynn Holly Johnson. To think that at one time not too long ago (at the tail end of the first term of the Reagan Administration) the drinking age in Florida was just 18. So going on Spring Break to Florida to drink and get laid, was a much more likely possibility than it was for those of us (like myself) who didn't get our degrees until the early 90s. I was born too late and had to endure an extra 3 years of needless prohibition, sobriety, and pent-up women.

There was actually 300,000 college students in Ft Lauderdale Florida over a 4 week span (the month of March) in 1984. Gas was cheap. College kids piled into cars and could drive down I-95 from (wherever) for less than $50 for the car load. You had to find a shoehorn to squeeze onto a tiny piece of sand on that 26 miles of public beach. Today, no one goes to Ft Laudedale except Eurotrash and Daytona Beach is lucky if they get 40,000 for the month of March. If the kids want to drink on Spring Break, they have to fly to Cancun and risk being murdered by druglords.

Brace yerself, a Dem speaks common sense....in the WSJ.

We won't achieve energy security by restricting our own companies from drilling or singling them out for punitive taxes. We're talking about an industry that provides millions of jobs and, for the foreseeable future, the power for our economic growth...

....let's stop demonizing Big Oil to score political points. It does nothing to encourage the new talent, new ideas, and new entrepreneurs who are most likely to make breakthroughs in new sources of energy.

Wow. Another politician on the Big Oil tit moaning about "punitive taxes."

That's the way it works, you know. Spread millions to the lawmakers, and reap billions in tax subsidies. After they spread all those other millions through the years to limit competition.

But yeah - stop demonizing Big Oil, since they're THIS close to breakthroughs in new sources of energy. LOL

Solar electricity generation has gotten much more efficient in the last ten years. There are a lot more solar panels here in Phoenix than there were when I moved to this part of the country almost a decade ago....

They aren't "close" but they are getting better.

Sooooo....if we say, doubled solar and wind generating capacity tomorrow, that would account for about 3-4% of the US energy needs.

Big f'ing whoop.

Probably not even that much.

I would like the technology available such that solar panels were cheap enough that they would be installed on every roof of every house south of the Mason Dixon line (much like central air conditioners are today.)

Unfortunately (even with government subsidy) we aren't there yet, not even close. Maybe in 20 years we will be.

Either way, you will not see me argue for the dismantling of coal power plants on nuke plants. Solar is fine (as a supplement) but I think we need to double our nuke plant capacity and re-open Yucca Mountain (FU Harry Reid.)

Feb., 2011 "IBM’s new thin-film solar cell has broken a world record for having an efficiency of 9.6 percent."

when solar cells hit the 35-40% efficiency range then they will be acceptable - 40 - 50 years maybe?
