I'm beginning to see how much of a struggle it is to raise a daughter. Mine is now in 5th grade.

Yesterday her "boyfriend" - a kid that lives maybe 9 houses down from us gave her a flower. Innocent enough, and then she proceeds to tell us they sat by each other on the bus and held hands. Aww...ain't that cute

Except this morning I'm reading her text message on her phone (yea, I do that, fuck her privacy, I'm her daddy) and this little manipulative bastard is using the same lines on her that I'd use on a girl when I'm 17 trying to get her panties off. He's decided they need to start kissing so he is trying everything - from "its not a big deal" to "it won't be scary" to "are we just going to hold hands forever"?

in one way I think its a good thing because she is learning early that a guy will say anything and its 100% bullshit but I'm surprised we're having to address the pressure tactics of a boy this early.

My 14 year old is a knucklehead. I truly expect to see her on an episode of "16 and Pregnant" in a couple years. That or in Juvie.

Once they hit 14 or 15, it's pretty much over. They're going to do about whatever the fuck they want and, short of keeping them locked in their rooms, there's not a whole lot you can do about it. Nor should you try. Do your job when they're younger, be up front with them, let them know you have expectations and then you just have to let em go. Everybody's got to live their own life, mistakes and all.

That said, I know for sure that there's no way the MIF's kids or their friends are doing anything near as bad or as often as me, Stu and our crowd did at that age. For one thing, the drinking age was 18 back then, and even if you weren't 18, it was fully expected and accepted that you were drinking beer at 16. We used to go to one of the local pizza joints after every one of our soccer games, on school nights, and sit around and order pitchers and pizza, not worrying one bit if anybody saw us. Nobody gave a shit. Me and Logan used to go to the drive up grocery and get a six pack of tall boys most school nights and just ride around drinking in my convertible Mustang. And Friday afternoons it was straight to the local western themed saloon on the outskirts of town (Buck and Ollie's) right from the school parking lot, and smoking weed on the way over. They served beer out of quart sized mason jars at Buck's. It's still in operation, but I haven't been in years. Friday afternoons that place was packed with high school kids getting drunk. None of the kids around town would dare do any of that these days, and nobody would serve them if they tried...

I raised a daughter. She's 28 now. She's high maintenace, but she turned out just fine, as did my son. I did it alone for 5 years.
