Question for the Webmasters:

If I wanted to start my own website where I wanted to upload new content frequently, how do I go about that? Would I set up a domain though someplace like godaddy.com or what? I'm pretty ignorant on the subject, any help would be appreciated.

godaddy's big thing is selling you domain names.

The process for loading content is pretty standard, once you sign up with someone, you have a number of ways to load it, but for websites where you're constantly changing a front page , adding videos, etc, I'd go with ftp

so you go to a place like Godaddy but really there is no shortage of them - they vary on what type of functionality they support for example if their webserver software supports asp or jsp (if you don't know what that is no biggie) or what interfaces they have - such as a wizard type approach to building a webpage, or setting up multiple emails , a blog, etc., - register, pay a fee for your domain name if you want one or just use the default name they give you (the difference between goatpen.net versus goatpen.godaddy.com), select the level of bandwidth you want and diskspace, and the in they''ll give you all the particulars about how to upload and provide a url. Then you setup your ftp software with that information and after that its pretty much like using windows explorer. You drag files, videos, etc from your computer to your domain space and it transfers them. Depending on what you want to setup, you have to develop a few files.

Floater used to be the guy to do that around here, but from the website here it looks like ATM is the guy that has the most experience with it. I could help you out with the basics.

I don't know how you get on the internet but if you have a fuse account, they give you a shitload of diskspace and pretty much unlimited bandwidth as part of their dsl package.

Piggybacking off of Bluecat (don't even say it fuckheads), what if I want to buy a .com domain name that, when I type it in says is owned by godaddy yet they tell me its unavailable? .biz is available though, what's the difference if anybody can click on it with a computer?

Content would be blog items, articles, pictures, etc. The powers that be at the newspaper have decided that my job isn't necessary anymore. Not me personally, they still have use for me, but they no longer have use for high school sports coverage in small communities. I'm toying with the idea of how to fill that void...

Bluecat, you may already be familiar with it, but I recommend Word Press. Word Press is what powers the home page here at the goat pen (hit home on the nav bar).

The appearance is changeable in a lot of different ways to suit what you need and its easy to post and update your content.

Go HERE if you want to see what it looks like and how you can post information using the software. I'm pretty sure I have you set up as a contributor to the goat pen blog, so you should have no issues getting in or even submitting something if you actually wanted to post.

Its pretty easy to set up with most webhosting companies, often as easy as just hitting a button and bam, the basic word press stuff is downloaded to your website, and you then just need to log in to post your content and start messing with the setting to customize your site. There are also many sites that have themes available to change the appearance of your site closer to what you want and word press powered sites and blogs can be pretty varied.

Probably a better option for you, is that you should also should have the ability to start a blog at yourblog.wordpress.com by going to wordpress.com without paying for web hosting, if you want to try it out first. You could migrate it over to a new domain later if you need to, or I think you can simply register a domain and have it applied to the blog that they host for you, not sure.

Our site is an example of a word press blog, as I mentioned.
Lots of other blogs are as well. There are also some pretty stunning examples of what can be done.

http://blogs.adobe.com/
http://kb24.com

Theres also several other content management systems like drupal and free blog sites like blogger and tumblr that I think will host blogs and are similar to word press.

It's not really a posse anymore when you get down to the last member, is it. It's just a dude that used to be in a posse...

Thanks, Cash, that is quite helpful. I'm still ignorant as fuck on this stuff, but hopefully I'll be able to wade through it.

Rat, I may take you up on that.

depending on the scope of what you are trying to do, I wouldn't mind getting involved. If you are really serious about it that is.

Thanks, Cash -- how much trouble would it be to make some/all content subscription pay? Is PayPal the only option and does that limit what web servers I'm able to use?

It would involve one or multiple plugins that would be added to word press (generally this is easy). It depends if there are any out there that are effective.

Word Press is open source so there are all kinds of people making plugins that do certain things (an example of a plugin added to the goat pen blog are the panels on our homepage that show the login box/who you are if you are logged into the forums, it also shows recent posts on the forum, and the plugin disabled word press's members functions and tied the member list for our homepage to the member list of our forums so that when you log into the forum or blog, you are logging into the same thing, essentially.

http://www.sumaplugin.com/

Here is an example of something that can probably be added that does exactly what you want. It's not free though, looks like it would be a couple hundred bucks. There may be a free one that does similar stuff, but its hard to say without doing more searching.
