Book that statement and revisit the first Monday in April.

The first time many people in the Triangle saw Austin Rivers play in person was last summer during the Greater N.C. Pro-Am basketball league at N.C. Central.
During one of Rivers' first games, he found himself trapped near the sideline by his defender. Rivers twitched to his right before accelerating to his left, shedding his man for a pretty reverse layup. It was the kind of move the dook* fans in attendance came to see, the type of play they hope Rivers will deliver Wednesday when the No. 10 Blue Devils (19-4, 6-2 ACC) face No. 5 North Carolina (20-3, 7-1) in Chapel Hill (ESPN, 9 p.m.).
The only problem was that the referee called Rivers for a travel on the hesitation step.
After the whistle, Rivers kept after the official, barking a couple of "Hey, refs!" that failed to get his attention. He continued to press the issue and said something else, and the referee responded by giving Rivers a technical foul. Rivers no longer remembers his exact words, but he says they were something along the lines of: "That move is why I was the No. 1 recruit in the country. Stop calling a travel."
"I've been doing that move my whole life - it's my move," Rivers said recently, reflecting on the summer-league play. "I do it at least once a game, and I haven't been called for travel yet this season. He called it twice that game."

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
Good lord! You mean Texas actually won a road game last night? I'm floored. Probably too little too late, though. They have ZERO wins against ranked teams and their best two wins might be against a mediocre UCLA and a pretty good (but not great) Temple team. If they hadn't lost to Oregon State and NC State early in the season (or actually won those two close games at home versus KU and Mizzou), they'd probably be in decent shape for a tourney bit. But at this point, at 15-9, they need to pull the shocker and win the conference tournament. I don't see them running the table with the rest of their regular season schedule.

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
From a Yahoo sports story about upcoming games this week:
"In the past 75 meetings, Duke has won 38 and Carolina 37, with the Blue Devils scoring one more point than the Tar Heels (5,858 to 5,857)."

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
"341. Tenn-Martin"
"But as surprising as Miami’s victory in Cameron might have been, it actually doesn’t make the list of the biggest road upsets of 2011-12. Using Ken Pomeroy’s probability percentages (which are adjusted as the season goes along, taking into account what came after each game), these are the five biggest shockers of the season to date:
UT Martin 59, UAB 54 (15).
Date: Nov. 27.
Pomeroy probability: 5.9 percent. It’s not that the Blazers are good, it’s that the Skyhawks are that bad. Martin is 3-22, with its other two victories over non-Division I opponents. It is 0-12 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Yet somehow, the Skyhawks led virtually the entire way in Bartow Arena on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend."
More:
"345. LA-Monroe"
"Dishonorable mention: Noted motivator and tactician Isiah Thomas (19) and Florida International, which somehow has lost twice at home in 90 percent probability games. The Golden Panthers were beaten Dec. 3 by an Alabama State team that was winless at the time and did not have another D-I victory until January; FIU then lost Jan. 7 to a Louisiana-Monroe team that is 2-22. Nice work, Zeke."
Finally (this was the biggest upset of the season according to Pomeroy):
"Presbyterian 56, Cincinnati 54 (14).
Date: Nov. 19.
Pomeroy probability: 5.7 percent. The Bearcats led by 15 points with less than nine minutes remaining and apparently figured they had the game won. They didn’t. The Blue Hose pulled the mother of all upsets."
The Blue Hose? Really?

From the "Back From the Dead" section of that article:
"Larry Eustachy (23). A drinking problem cost him his job at Iowa State in 2003 and it has been a long road back through the obscurity of Hattiesburg, Miss."
That's good sass. He sassed Eustachy and he sassed Hattiesburg. That's double sassery...

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
Damn, that guy is still there? He was hired at the same time that A&M hired Gillispie, almost a decade ago. Never thought that guy would hold down that job without hearing anything about it for so long, and without making a tournament appearance or anything.hedge wrote:From the "Back From the Dead" section of that article:

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
Sporcle.com has a great game where you have to name all the Division 1 schools and their nicknames. Some of my favorites:
Canisius Golden Griffins
Niagara Purple Eagles
Presbyterian Blue Hose
Youngstown State Penguins
Furman Paladins
Loyola-Chicago Ramblers
Southern Utah Thunderbirds
Texas-San Antonio / Cal State Bakersfield Road Runners
UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (like from the Steely Dan song and album)
