I think he pretty much explained in his last interview, with Sally Jenkins, that he didn't know what he was supposed to do and he just followed protocol. it also seemed he was never given the graphic details by McQueary and probably never knew them until Sandusky was arrested.

the outcry over Paterno, IMO, has been more criminal than whatever it is people are blaming him for

here is the appropriate response

"what? that perverted motherfucker was showering with young boys in MY LOCKERROOM? I don't even bang chicks in there!"

seriously, you're being told this and you don't know what to do?

Look, Joe was Catholic. I'm sure he was buggered by many priests growing up, so this wasn't a huge deal to him.

Kidding. Or am I?

The question I have is how did McQueary divulge things to Paterno? Was he clear cut or did he say something vague like, "I don't know, coach, but I think Coach Sandusky might have been getting a little too friendly with one of the kids in the shower."

Now, granted, most people, at the least, would confront Sandusky and/or make McQueary explain himself more clearly, but OTOH, when you've got some young guy levying accusations at a guy whom the boss man's known for a couple of decades, the boss is likely to be a little less receptive to what the young assistant is saying. "You probably just misunderstood things, son..." Or something like that.

If Joe, at the least, went to school officials about this and they sat on the ball, I'd say the wrath should be more with the school officials. I think what some people want (or wanted in hindsight) is for Joe to fire Sandusky on the spot, because, after all, we're talking about kids, even if you haven't been given all the facts or have been able to confirm if McQueary is a lying douchebag. Fire him, damnit!

Anyway, I think Joe realizes, regardless, that he could have and should have been more aggressive in following up on things. Simple as that. But the way some people are talking, it's as if he condone the alleged (though, the gathered evidence has become pretty much incontrovertible) molestations himself. Like I said a while ago, when it comes to the subject matter, you've got people who are amping up the outrage as if that's what they're supposed to do. Some of it doesn't even approach rationality.

The guy was what, 75 when he was told? My mom is 72 and can't remember what she had for breakfast yesterday.

To be honest, I vacillate on the issue.

I can see how an 80 years old man would be more confused and cautious in the face of this news. However, if Sandusky exhibited any of this behavior in the 70s, 80s or 90s (which has yet to be determined), then I fault JoePa just as much.

This information about '99 makes me pause in my total clearance of JoePa in this fuckery.

this isn't like he caught the guy stealing cable TV or Sandusky got a DUI.

There is very little grey area here, and why would anyone be motivated to look the other way of a child molester or worse, create a policy where you acknowledge his child molesting by not allowing him to bring kids back into the locker room anymore?

I can understand the initial confusion but not after some time to put it all in context and realize what is happening.

Yeah, that's why I said I'd like to know how McQueary conveyed the event to Joe Pa. If he was vague, I could see the old man getting a little confused or even skeptical. But after the other inferences, if he didn't scream bloddy murder at school officals and/or Sandusky himself (the latter he obviously failed to do, given Sandusky's continued employment) then Joe pretty much just looked the other way or hoped that the matter would just go away. Didn't handle it well enough at all.

Sandusky wasn't employed at the time, but he had access to the facilities. After the reported incident, his keys and access were taken away. Not sure who did that, though...was it Paterno, the AD or the school, overall?

That's why I say the earlier years are more of a concern to me. If it's a he-said, she-said and the authorities don't pursue a case, not sure what else Paterno could do. However, if he knew something fishy was going on back in the 80s and 90s (as has been circumstantially alleged), then he is more at fault than a little.

there's a whole LOT of people who are guilty if you apply the same logic as with Paterno. the newspaper editors who wouldn't do stories, the parents of the kids who were molested or the parents of the ones who might have heard stories about Sandusky, shit, you might as well include anyone who ever met Sandusky. throw them all in the fire.

the point is that there was clearly a lot of doubt as to what was going on and Paterno somehow ended up as the lightning rod for it. And there's probably a shitload about this situation the media and, therefore, the public doesn't know.
