Gricar was 59, and just about eight months away from retirement.

Pennsylvania law allows for missing people to be declared dead after seven years, but a judge can rule to have it happen faster if the family petitions. In this case, Gricar's daughter, Lara, who lives in Washington state and is her father's sole heir, petitioned the court earlier this month.

Her attorney said she is seeking closure.

Gricar's case has attracted national attention. He is frequently profiled on television crime shows, and several blogs and websites are dedicated to the mystery.

But despite creative efforts by law enforcement, there haven't been any credible leads since the four-year anniversary, when police revealed that Gricar's home computer had saved searches for "how to wreck a hard drive" and "water damage to a notebook computer."

Well, that was severe enough for him to go up the chain of command and report the incident...which he understood would lead to an investigation, the engagement of Campus Police and likely local authorities.

I'm saying if he had an idea of this behavior prior to that night the Grad Asst came to his house, then he should have gone up the chain of command (like he did) and press for police involvement (if the chain of command does not). Prior knowledge basically invalidates his Grand Jury testimony that McQueary told him he witnessed "inappropriate behavior" but was not sure the extent of what that consisted of.

I'm saying previous knowledge compounds that flagrancy of Paterno's actions.

yep. I didn't see anything in the grand jury report that showed Paterno knew anything, however there were plenty of people that had their suspicions

so you are up to at least 4 upper echelon pennstate personel who covered for this guy for multiple years in fact rewarded him with emeritus status, parking spot, membership to the gym etc

A woman I knew who's a PSU grad told me about the missing DA thing a few days ago. I have no idea why so many people would be involved in a coverup for something so heinous unless they foolishly thought they were protecting the university. Paterno doesn't seem like the type of guy who would think its OK to cover something up but then who knows what he's really like.

The thing I still don't understand is how McQueary still has a job. He should be charged with a felony like the AD but I guess he's got immunity since he's a witness. But that doesn't mean he should still be employed by PSU unless they're concerned about other things he knows.

McQueary was just a kid back then and told the person he thought he should. He was probably freaked out too. It does make you wonder though how he joined the staff right after Sandusky "retired".

but the same rules apply to Paterno: he told the person he thought he should and not the police. also, unlike Paterno or anyone else, McQueary actually saw it happen and ran. he could've stopped it all right there but he ran home and called his pappy. Sandusky has been around PSU ever since and McQueary has worked around him and said nothing until now.

The AD was JoePa's boss in name only. Paterno ran that program and made all the decisions.

He was 28. Old enough, not a kid. On the other hand, he was essentially an employee of both Paterno and Sandusky and that carries weight.

No he's not when it comes to personnel decisions. There's a line of command that can be talked around but you can't just say Paterno was the boss because he's JoePa. As you say, it sounds good but it's just not true.
