I agree with eCat. I think we could better say that the GOP is in and of itself, pretty pro-Israel. I think that stems from the guilt that the party feels about the US staying out of World War II for as long as we did.

Israel is a massive arms customer, ally, willing participant in much of our intelligence skullduggery and is a solid counter-balance in a vital region.

Saying that the GOP favoring Israel because we stayed out of WW2 for so long has “nothing to do with it” because this is now the 21st century is akin to saying that believing in affirmative action and giving black children a leg up over white children in employment and university acceptance because we enslaved their ancestors in the 19th century has “nothing to do with it.” What happened in America 200 years ago has everything to do with it counselor. Same is true for Judaism, Israel, and our collective isolationism guilt from WW2.

Without tariffs how do you start to tackle the federal debt?

First, if you knew anything outside of the drivel you are told to believe, you would know that attempting to use tariffs to fund such is a fool's errand. Then again, you are a fucking fool.

Easy (in theory yet damn near impossible due to political realities and obviously this is a rough outline akin to deciding how to do landscaping from a 747 flying 35,000 feet in the sky)

1. Social Security and Medicare (Yes, I know SS is outside of the normal budgeting but they are both major factors)
*Increase eligibility ages (even more in the case of SS)
*For SS, increase ages. For example, you could have early retirement set at 65 (currently 62), full retirement at 70 (currently 67 for those born in '60 and after) and max rate retirement at 75 (set at 70). Granted, the average life expectancy for Americans is something like 13 or 14 years more than it was when SS was established, and the age was set at 65 then. This will require an incremental approach, which is how the ages have been increased traditionally. The type of age increases would need to be applied to disability claimants as well because the vocational guidelines change at 55 (I think?) and make it much easier to obtain disability after said age.
*For Medicare, increase the eligibility age from 65 to 70 or what have you. Again, this will take an incremental approach set by statute like SS has had in the past.
*Constitutional Amendment that prevents borrowing against the SS Trust Fund
*Increase the income caps for SS and Medicare payroll taxes and increasing the rates.
2. Adjust/Increase tax rates on the upper brackets and on cap gains. Horse and Sparrow economic policies over the past 45 years have led to a lot of this shit.
3. Clean up the tax code. The tax code should not be something used to stimulate the economy. That’s asinine. Use it for revenue and revenue only. Do away with the bullshit credits, exemptions, allowances, deductions, etc.
4. Private contracting? For something the government already does? Stop that shit and stop it now. The DoD budget is an orgy of waste when it comes to private contracting. Talk to any retired senior enlisted, warrant officer, field grade officer or general officer from any branch and if that person is being honest, even the most conservative will give you first-hand example after first-hand example of the bullshit waste private contracting has brought about.
5. Adjust the retirement / disability systems for military personnel. I get that the retirement system is a big attraction, but just like SS, many who aren’t familiar would be shocked by the folks qualifying for “100% VA Disability” (which is $3300+ and can be something around $4500 or so with kids and spouse…AND TAX FREE) on top of the healthy pensions these guys are getting only for the same folks to then get a civil service job with DoD, VA or other Federal department or some sort of full time employment in the private sector. I’m all for paying servicemembers their retirement pensions and compensating disabled vets, but look at the shit that helps qualify for disability ratings. It’s astounding.
6. Audit the DoD up and down, and go through contracts with fine tooth combs. Again, the waste is astounding.
7. Find some way to continue keeping interest rates artificially low to help keep the debt from increasing quicker but without fueling inflation.
8. Balanced budget amendment (obviously with an exception for declarations of war and certified emergencies…say something that requires 2/3 majority in the senate)
9. Pay as you go amendment for tax cuts

Well given what you have just said about audits I am sure you are extremely happy with what Trump has already done. He took the smartest existing government workers and did away with their old jobs writing code and gave them a new job with DOGE to audit everything. So yeah, what you have said is already happening.

Seniors vote so touching social security is like career death for any elected politician. But what what you have said about the age of enrollment is correct. When it was implemented in 1935, the eligibility age was tied to average age at death. So no one was actually supposed to get it. Nowadays people spend upwards of of one third of their life span collecting checks. So yeah raise the age to 75 or whatever for people who are 50 years old today and tell them to go piss up a rope. They will likely live to 100 anyway.

More to the point, our legal immigration system is tied to family life and social security. And that is what is bankrupting us. I will be specific. The way the law on immigration goes, you get US citizenship and then you petition for your mom and then you dad. And after a few years they get citizenship at age 55 or 60 or whatever and they work for 5 or 10 years and then collect social security checks for 30 years. That is a broken system, one that you and I both know the DNC will never ever allow any of their congressional representatives to fix.


That said we still need tariffs. We need them for the reasons you just gave. With tariffs as a tax there is no tax credit or tax deduction. Everyone pays full freight. And that means rich people pay more to import their Mercedes.
