"An SEC team in a weird year like this year could go 0-18 and if they lost every single game by only one single point, their efficiency or NET rankings would actually look very good because they would seem like they are just about as good as Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, A&M, Kentucky, etc etc."

Well, if they lost every game, home and away, by one point, isn't it fair to say they are not only just about as good as all those teams but virtually the same?

NET may take the human element out, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is not intended to be used to measure how deserving a team is to make the NCAA. It measures how good a team appears based on efficiency, but is silent on whether you win the games. If UNC beats Duke by 1 point or loses to Duke by 1 point, the impact to NET is almost exactly the same regardless of winning and losing

Yes, virtually the same in terms of points, but an 0-18 season and therefore an awful basketball season nevertheless. Wins and losses are the stat that counts.

The NCAA actually included an evaluation with NET this year that is a resume metric. It is called wins above bubble or WAB. UNC’s ranking was 42 so in line with a bubble team.

The stat uses NET to determine what the expected record the #45 team in net would have against your schedule and subtracts that from your win total.

Couldn't somebody win the decathlon without winning a single event? World's greatest athlete and didn't win a single event. Where's the outrage?

I bet that won't stand in Chapel Hill
Correct. The university is pumping money from the academic side into football and basketball coupled with revenue share and boosters stepping up on NIL to rectify the recent shortcomings / catch up in football / show the SEC or Big 10 that Carolina is able and willing to compete financially.

every team should know from day one where they stand getting into the tournament based on a ranking system. One that values the entire season. So that if a player does get hurt in the last 5 games it doesn't derail their entire season.
I agree.

A computer algorithm does all this. I could do the whole thing with four or five data tables, a couple stored procedures, a single report view, and one daily ETL feed updating all division 1 wins and losses. Then everyone would know all the time exactly where they stand and what would have to happen to get into the tournament.
The NET ranking basically is an algorithm. Y'all are pissed Carolina got in just b/c you're haters, and I get that, but citing Quad 1 record is just pure emotionalism. Not all Quad 1 teams (or games) are nearly the same, to just point to a team's final Quad 1 record is short-sighted and dumb.
I am happy the Tar Heels made it. I am especially happy that they have to win a play-in game because that will earn more justification in the eyes of those who do NOT think they are worthy. Beat San Diego State, and they truly are worthy.

Pat McAfee and Shannon Sharpe are going off on their ESPN shows about UNC today

When you have guys like that weighing in, well...its not just the "haters"
I like the stinky pinky but only up to the first knuckle, I do not want a GD thumb up there--I've told her multiple times and I always catch her when she tries to pull a fast one---it's my butthole for Chrissakes I'm gonna know--so cut out the BS.

They are claiming that West Virginia is getting left out because of an injury, but they played almost the whole year without that guy. But then they have Iowa State as a #3 seed like giving them credit for "being healthy now." Iowa State's resume is not as good in virtually every respect than #4 seed A&M (and others). But Iowa State "woulda done better" I guess. "Oh, wait, whats that? A&M played 9 games without starters including many without its all-SEC point guard? Never heard about it....Ahhh, fuck it, who cares. Also, fuck West Virginia, I need my check for $100k."

Then of course, after all of that and the whole field is announced Oetzelberger and Iowa State are like, "Oh by the way, uh, one of our starters is out for the rest of the year."
they have been bad without him though 9-10 since janurary 1
