It takes a long time to do DC. You could spend several weeks at the various Smithsonians and still not see everything.

Perfect example - DC. Surely you've done it all there, prof.
First, don't call me surely.

Second, I saw almost everything in DC as a kid. It included extensive inside tours of the White House, Capitol, Supreme Court, Federal Reserve, Washington/Lincoln/Jefferson monuments, Ford's Theatre, National Cathedral, the Smithsonian. It left a profound impression on me ever since.

Two years ago, I took a quick trip to DC with my kids, but we only had time to see the outside of maybe half these places. (We did see the Air and Space Museum in depth.) If I had a week in DC, I could take my kids to see the inside of all these places, revisit my own old patriotic memories, and maybe create the same patriotic memories in my kids.

And like AA said, the Smithsonian alone would take a week.

Places I've never visited, but would like to:

1. Seattle
2. Anchorage (i.e. Alaskan coast)
3. Yosemite

Next year will be my 30th anniversary, and we'll probably see #1 and #2 on a cruise.

Yosemite is definitely worth a trip. If you can, you should go in winter. Access is usually limited, but there are far fewer people. During the summer the place can be packed like Disney. Also it looks amazing with the snow.

Houston is a bigger, hotter version of Atlanta, which is fine, but probably not vacation worthy.

How cold does it get in Yosemite in the winter?

Places I've been, glad I went, but saw everything I wanted to see, and am in no big hurry to go back anytime soon (no particular order):

1. LA
2. Vegas
4. Dallas
5. San Antonio
6. Houston
7. El Paso
8. Philly

AA is correct on this. Same goes for Dallas, which someone once accurately called, "Atlanta without trees."

For the most part, the best thing about Atlanta is how I-285 gets you around it.

The best steak house in the US is in Atlanta (Bone's. You are welcome). Plus, as a Braves fan, I have reason to visit often. Otherwise, meh. Better cities to spend a leisure visit on.

I think it's best to take I75 right through it and avoid all the traffic trying to get around it.

What? "Better cities to spend a leisure visit on"? What can surpass the World of Coke, Underground, Cyclorama, Stone Mountain, CNN, the Varsity and The Big Chicken?

How DARE you, sir!

That's another thing I love about Atlanta: you are either stuck in traffic, or driving 90 mph just to keep up with the flow of interstate traffic.

Sometimes a possibility. Plus, you can abuse the HOV lane.
