Did something happen other than those dipshits not spending any money in the town?
I don't think the Cougars ever played IN the city of Memphis Tennessee. They played AGAINST Memphis 10 years ago in a bullshit bowl down in Miami beach Florida.

Either way, BYU fans don't generally travel very well and if they do, they spend basically no money. They arrive, rent their cars, drive to the cheapie motel, eat fast food, go to the game, buy no concessions, leave, and fly home. There is no alcohol or tobacco consumption, no expensive restaurants, no pricey hotel stays, and they stay away from the naughty-nudie places. The local Chamber of Commerce cringes when the local bullshit bowl game wind up with the Mormons.

The ONLY exception to the Mormons spend no money while traveling philosophy, is gambling. Utah being the largest common border with Nevada, the LDS DO gamble. ALOT of gambling. The old saying goes as follows:

Jews do not recognize Christ.
Catholics do not recognize divorce.
Mormons do not recognize each other in a casino in Vegas, Reno, Wendover, or Mesquite.

SMU is a 7 point favorite over undefeated Pittsburgh. That is the last game of the night for the East Coast teams. The country will be watching. If Pitt is to get any respect, it starts here. They have to do go down to Dallas and win by a point.

LMAO at “the country will be watching”…no, the country doesn’t get the ACC network, which is the channel deemed most apt for that game.

The major networks went with Wisconsin/Iowa and A&M/South Carolina…both of which are far more compelling matchups. ESPN went with Louisville/Clemson…obviously finding it a more intriguing ACC matchup than 2 middling programs like SMU and Pitt…

yeah, whatever

pretty sure that both Pitt and SMU could beat Wisconsin, South Carolina, or Iowa so I think the choices were more, which school has more alumni with televisions and more interest rather than which is more "compelling." Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Carolina, those 3 schools are not going to the playoffs

How can someone downplay the Carolina-A&M game?

In the heart of the Southeastern Conference, where legends are born and rivalries are forged in the fires of competition, one matchup stands tall: the University of South Carolina Gamecocks versus the Texas A&M Aggies. This is not merely a game; it’s a battle for pride, tradition, and supremacy.

As the sun sets on a crisp autumn afternoon, the stage is set. The air crackles with anticipation, and the echoes of past glories fill the stadium. The Gamecocks, donning their garnet and black, have a rich history steeped in grit and determination. From the raucous crowds at Williams-Brice Stadium to the passionate fanbase that bleeds Carolina colors, this team embodies resilience. They’ve faced adversity head-on, turning setbacks into comebacks, and forging an identity that’s hard to match.

Across the field, the Texas A&M Aggies arrive with their own storied legacy. Clad in maroon and white, they march onto the turf with the thunderous spirit of the 12th Man behind them. Known for their relentless defense and explosive offense, the Aggies bring a tenacity that makes every yard contested. The traditions of A&M—yells, bonfire, and the camaraderie of their loyal fans—create an atmosphere that’s electric.

At the heart of this rivalry lies the Bonham Trophy, a symbol of excellence and fierce competition. Each year, this coveted prize is fought for with a passion that reflects the stakes involved. It represents not just victory, but a chance to etch one’s name into the annals of college football history. The trophy embodies the fierce pride of both institutions, capturing the spirit of a rivalry that transcends mere wins and losses.

With every snap of the ball, this contest becomes a showcase of strategy, skill, and heart. The clash of helmets echoes like thunder, each tackle a declaration of war, each touchdown a testament to hard work and dedication. As the Gamecocks and Aggies battle for supremacy, they not only compete for the Bonham Trophy but also for the respect of their peers, the adoration of their fans, and a place in the storied tradition of college football.

As the final whistle blows, the scoreboard may tell a tale of victory or defeat, but what endures is the legacy of rivalry. South Carolina and Texas A&M, two proud programs, intertwined in a narrative of passion and pride that will resonate through the ages. This is more than a game; it’s a testament to the spirit of college football—a saga of rivalry that continues to captivate the hearts of fans everywhere.

I know you guys don't care, but the winner of the Pitt-SMU game, that winner will be playing in the ACC championship game. Its an elimination game at this point, what with Miami and Clemson kicking ass. So THAT is what makes that game so "compelling." There are still 4 teams in the ACC without an ACC loss. Talk about a top-heavy conference.

Pitt can't even sell out their home games despite being one of their best seasons in a long while. They have a minimal alumni base. It's a great medical university, but became irrelevant when Penn State joined the Big Ten and decided there was no need to play them anymore. After that, no one in Western PA cares about Pitt playing Southern ACC teams, especially some outpost in Texas. Even West Virginia, just an hour away, has more support in their worst years.

Maybe so

Perhaps they are just patiently waiting for their next Dan Marino?

Ran into an actual Pitt fan at the airport today. He was wearing his Pitt Panthers swag and we chatted for a bit. I asked him if he was on his way to Dallas today and he said yes, but that he had to take a business meeting in Phoenix today first before heading to Dallas late tonight. I asked him why things have been so successful this season and he said the transfer portal was the greatest thing ever. It allowed Pitt to pick up a disgruntled 5-star QB who was riding the bench at Alabama, something that never would have happened pre-portal. It allows schools like his to do things they haven't done in decades, maybe not since sardis' point about Penn State abandoned them.

It is not that no one had thought of it. It is instead an actual example that I am posting that shows the true consequences of the portal and how it has changed things. This portal pissed off Nick Saban so much that he would rather retire than adjust. It also allows schools that never mattered (like Pitt) to suddenly matter.
