Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread
I was in KC last week, on a business trip to nearby Leavenworth. KC supposedly has the best steaks around, although I didn't have the opportunity to scope them out.
I like DC too. Like NOLA, it is a one-of-a-kind place. Its uniqueness is its charm. Ditto for Vegas, which will be just like NOLA in 200 years if they don't renovate.
I wasn't all that impressed with LA either. Atlanta has a more impressive skyline. I was more impressed with the spectacular surrounding geography of mountains, canyons, ocean, etc.
IMHO, the most beautiful city I've seen in the US is San Francisco. But the people there are bizarre. I wore my NRA ballcap around all day, just to annoy them.

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread
These Gallup poll numbers are stunning:
82% of Americans disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job.
69% say they have little or no confidence in the legislative branch of government, an all-time high and up from 63% in 2010.
57% have little or no confidence in the federal government to solve domestic problems, exceeding the previous high of 53% recorded in 2010 and well exceeding the 43% who have little or no confidence in the government to solve international problems.
53% have little or no confidence in the men and women who seek or hold elected office.
Americans believe, on average, that the federal government wastes 51 cents of every tax dollar, similar to a year ago, but up significantly from 46 cents a decade ago and from an average 43 cents three decades ago.
49% of Americans believe the federal government has become so large and powerful that it poses an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens. In 2003, less than a third (30%) believed this.

Wife, daughter, grand daughter in November. I need to spend the rest of my vacation time with Mom at Christmas in Alabama. She'll be 84 in late November and I, obviously, need to spend all the time I can with her.

Well, I guess if thats the standard you set gonna be pretty damn hard. The Bulls did, however, have the best record in the NBA last year. The Bulls aren't the Bulls of old

I'm going to safey go with NYC still having the best Italian food in the States, and not NO.
But I'm sure New Orleans has the best Cajun, Creole, Vietnamese, Chinese, Mongolian, French, Greek, Russian, Polish, Ethiopian, Moroccan, Indian, Brazilian, Mexican, Argentinian, Egyptian, Lebanese, and Kosher food in the world. So they can afford to begrudge one small variety to another city.

Terrific places to visit for sure. I've hit the high points of most of them.crashcourse wrote:My top 5
1. NYC hands down
2. Washington DC
3. Chicago
4. Kansas City--trumans presidential--great ww1 museum, jazz, bbq, negro baseball museum, lots of art museums, westport, sprint district, city of fountains, the plaza, legends, new casino opening up at legends, great steamboat museum, etc etc
5. Los Angesles--would be higher but I hat the people there
Quality of daily life, though...I''ll take where I'm at. We're pretty green here, have an abundance of lakes, and I can look to my left and see arguably one of the best mountain vistas anywhere. Low crime, low taxes (no state income tax), and friendly, look-you-in-the-eye people. Little to no congestion (except for 6-7 saturdays in the fall).
heh - I guess I'm in a chamber of commerce mood because I'm digging this fall weather

Well, originally, it wasn't a 'where do you wish you lived' discussion. But rather a where is there a lot of fun stuff to do:
Make the question this: you've won a one-week vacation to a US city. Where are you going? What would be your second, third, fourth and fifth choices?

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread
Hard to go wrong with NYC and San Diego as a 1 and 2.
Likewise, Seattle is a good choice, as well.
Let me give you some choices that haven't been mentioned:
Philly is a vastly underrated city: Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, City Tavern, Franklin's post office, Betsy Ross house, Quakers, cheesesteak.
DC: Congress, 16 Smithsonians, Supreme Court, White House.
Flagstaff: mountains,deserts, and grand canyon
Phoenix
Denver/Bolder
Miami - Glades, South Beach, rent a car and do Key West for a day
Vegas

In no particular order: Washington DC, San Fran, Chicago, Seattle, and can't decide on a 5th. Maybe Denver.

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread
That's the rub - one week. After NYC/SD/SF I'm more inclined to give my week to someplace I've never been before, like Seattle or Honolulu.Professor Tiger wrote:1. Perfect example - DC. Surely you've done it all there, prof. If so theres gotta be 5 other places you'd want to spend 7 days.
