aTm,
I have membership in a forum that is having issues. A few questions:
Didn’t you used to have banner ads here? How are the operating costs of the forum? Is the server and software of this place stable? Does mgmt require a lot of your time? Would you ever consider being a resource person for a forum that has to find a new home and failing that, what kinda issue would it be to offer a home with multiple (many, dozens, a hundred?) threads.
You can email me if you have time or answer here or whatever.
TIA,
Yours in Don Sutton,
AA
It costs about three hundred dollars a year in hosting fees, the domain name registration, and likely ancillary garbage that the webhosting service has you pay for like backup and various scam security services. A few years ago it was probably 2/3 that price. Banner ads are worthless, maybe 10-15 years ago or however long ago this place started, I would get a hundred dollar check from Google once every couple years, but basically the amount that they pay eventually went down to where, i guess maybe it was going up but only by fractions of cents a month. God know what I have in the account now, and I removed ads from most pages after we had to upgrade. I used Google, and it also was a hassle because if I put the ad on ever page, to maximize impressions, basically even 10 years ago they had robots crawling the content and if their ad was on the same page as somebody named Jungle Rat saying he wanted to rape a chicken, they would suspend your account and you'd have to try to get it reinstated.
Maintenance for this is extremely low. I dont ever touch it. But every few years it breaks because some software or other gets upgraded by the webhost and I have to spend a day or so looking around, figure out what broke, and then fix it or get the software up to date or whatever.
Sure, I could have stayed in the past. I could have even been king. But in my own way, I am king.
