I think the prime directive here (on the left) is to claim that you are championing the dispossessed. If in 1939, you were a German, Russian, or Polish Jew, everything was taken from you. You were lucky just to be alive! Therefore, those who took from you are the enemy and (since leftists can only think linerarly) that enemy MUST be "on the right." Therefore, Nazis were far right wing. The fact that Nazis were left wing socialists created an intelectual paradox for the leftist, but they just chose to disregard that reality.
Today, Israel is a small country but a rich country, filled with literate, educated, people. They have a first world education system, a first world legislature, a first world judiciary, and a first world military. They are the ones with power in the region. The paleo-arabs, have nothing. They are primative. They are not much more than neanderthal level in their existance. So, a leftist (championing the dispossessed) MUST side with the paleo-arab.
If you think everyone is out to get ya, then it is so reactionary and so obvious to paint the world in the lens of good guys and bad guys and everyone who is like you (thinks that everyone is out to get them) must be a good guy.
