part of my job now is to interact more with the event team who does the meal and entertainment planning.

here are some random prices to show you where things are inflation wise

unlimited soda at 2 breaks during the day - out for 30 minute at each break is $25 per person (plus tax and 18% surcharge)

grab and go lunch which consists of a variety of panera type sandwiches, a bag of chips, a cookie and a bottle water - $65 per person (plus tax and 18% surcharge)

cheese and vegetable tray - $33 per person- available for 30 minutes

hummus and fruit spreads - $28 per person - available for 30 minutes

bar drinks - premium $14, house $12 per drink - no open bar is available, plus $200 per hour for servers

I did some quick math - we're going to drop $198,000 plus tax and 18% for 4 days to support two soda breaks and one afternoon snack break

I haven't even looked at the prices of the formal dinner we have planned.

I don't even want to know what a wedding will cost me in 25 years....

My mother-in-law spent a small fortune on our wedding, and we limited (at least officially...some friends were going to the bar room in the dining area and using our member number to get liquor drinks, which was cool, but the lunatics were not given that information out of a desire to avoid fucking anarchy) the three bars at the reception to wine and beer. Several kegs had been floated before the wedding party even entered the reception, and by the time the reception had ended, all of the kegs in the club were dry and most of the bottled beer had been brought over and consumed.

I'm hoping our daughter wants to elope...
I proudly took AFAM 040 at Carolina.

1200 people actually

and I just got off a call with my boss who shit his pants when I told I think we're going to be almost $2m over.

We have a line item budget review scheduled now on Tuesday. I'm only the messenger in this situation, I don't make decisions on event decisions, I just review them make sure nothing is going off the rails.

Its off the rails

Tree wrote: Mon Jan 30, 2023 1:17 pm So that's why I'm paying $7 for a carton of eggs.
you are paying $7 for 18 eggs because
  • no one wants to work at the egg farm and the town has 0% unemployment, so they have to pay real money for labor
  • no one wants to work at the egg packing plant and the town has 0% unemployment, so they have to pay real money for labor
  • no one wants to work as a trucker driving the eggs from the plant to the supermarket/costco/sam's club, so they have to pay real money for shipping
  • no one wants to work at the grocery store and the town has 0% unemployment, so they have to pay real money for labor
when "inflation" became a thing in 1973, it was not because of Richard Nixon or the Vietnam war or anything like that. It was because of OPEC. Oil imports drove inflation. The only regions of the country that benefited from this inflation were Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, etc, and other oil producing states. They became very rich while the rest of the county suffered in "stagflation." With "stagflation" came the "misery index" of the Carter Administration. We had a whole decade of gas lines, "stagflation", inflation, and misery.

This inflation is different. This one isn't driven by imported oil. Its driven by a labor shortage the likes we haven't seen since World War II. Now, young people wont work. Middle aged people retire early (because they had so few kids and no expenses.) So employers are completely fucked in the ass. Restaurant managers are working 7 days a week, opening and closing every day. Same for supermarkets. And retail (what little brick and mortar retail remains.) Everyone is fucked because everyone wants to be a manager and there are no people to manage.

That is why Domino's Pizza drivers are making $35/hour at the moment. 19 year old kids (who are willing to work) are making $91,000+ a year driving oil trucks in Midland Texas. This is why we have inflation.
Feminism: Eve eats ALL the apples, gives God the middle finder when He confronts her, and has the serpent serve Adam with an injunction ordering him to both stay away from her AND to provide her food and shelter because he dragged her out of the Garden.
