Big 12 is making the desperate move to survive while the ACC could be sent back to it's roots as a basketball conference. Which would be to the pleasure of many traditionalists on here.
The problem with an ACC school joining the SEC is they have some agreement on revenue sharing until 2034.

I'd like to see Clemson, FSU , NC St and UNC join the SEC.

GA Tech would be an option if they actually had a sports program of any note in the last 20 decades.

The SEC doesn't need to do anything, although I imagine they would take some plums (principally UVA and UNC) if it was actually possible to get them.

The Big Ten is actively watering down its brand. Right now they added two more weird fits, all for presumably dozens of hardcore LA college football fans. If the Big Ten goes to 20 teams or whatever its pretty much not even the Big Ten anymore, it would be the Big Ten plus half a conference of UCLA's Maryland's, Rutgers', etc

I know the SEC doesn't need to do anything, but it can make more money and screw the NCAA by gobbling a bunch of teams and have its own playoff with the Big 10.

They have to make sense though or you'll ruin the brand. The Big 10 is not anymore. Not when you sell out to LA and move the championship there from Indy. Gotta stay loyal to the "South Eastern" brand. Clemson and FSU make sense. Gotta stay football 1st so not sure about UNC. 😉

I have no idea what will happen. God only knows at this point.

If its all about money (and it is) then the B1G-T(16)N and the SEC going to 16 only makes sense if they are adding teams that bring more to the table than they take from it. They are now both at 16. That might be the perfect number to cap their conferences.

That said, they want
  • F$U
  • Clemson
  • probably Oregon and of course
  • Notre Dame
If they stay at 16 each and the 4 above submit, that means
  • Northwestern
  • Vanderbilt
  • Rutgers
  • and Miss State
its time to go.

These aren't conferences any more - they are TV conglomerates. A 16-team amalgamation is going to end up being two 8-team conferences under one umbrella, and who thinks they'll stop at 16? CFB is becoming less appetizing with each month.

The big guys just don't want to share all the tv $$$$$ with the little guys. Just because they all get the same 85 schollies, and just because any of these teams could beat any of the other teams on any given day, it doesn't mean they all bring something to the college football table. And so with all this tv $$$$ this was bound to happen.

Somebody has to lose. Dumping the deadweight just makes some other teams the deadweights

Agreed. But it doesn't matter. This (whatever this is) is going to happen. Nothing we can do about it.

Or else you'll have 16 teams with 5-7, 6-6 and 7-5 records. Won't that be fun?

20 team conferences won't do much to intensify rivalries.

Maybe people will like watching Alabama play Texas, Texas A&M, FSU and Clemson during a season but will they really get all that hyped up about Auburn/Bama game if Bama is 8-3 and Auburn is 7-4 when they play?

The national championship game will be the winners of each conference.

Now that the LA schools are off of the board and that it appears ND is content to remain independent, it’s fair to argue UNC is the biggest piece left. UNC may not have Clemson’s football power, but UNC is a major brand that brings with it being the biggest school in the 22nd market (Charlotte), the 24th (Raleigh-Durham) and 47th (Triad - Greensboro and Winston-Salem) ranked television markets.

I do fear that UNC is going to be tied at the hip (similar to what the Virginia legislature did by forcing UVa to bring VT into the ACC) with that trade school in western Raleigh thanks to the NCGOP and its minions on the UNC system Board of Governors and their bitches on the UNC Board of Trustees. The B10 likely has no desire for that shit show, and I can’t imagine the SEC sees a need to add those asshats either.

The academic crowd will prefer the B10 for obvious reasons, and the B10 has every sport UNC offers except mens and women’s fencing whereas the SEC doesn’t offer mens and women’s fencing, field hockey, mens and womens lacrosse, womens rowing, mens soccer or wrestling.

The basketball office does not control the athletic department anymore, but given the obvious connection there with Delaney, you can bet they will lobby for the Big 10. That is a really big deal for UNC given UNC really prides itself on its Olympic sports and that several of those programs listed above are amongst the best in the nation.

I get the sense that the “heavy hitters” (term used by Rams Club to denote those 100+ donors who give at least $100k per year specifically to the football program apart from their other standard annual donation or other major gift pledges) want the SEC, and given that those guys do whatever Mack Brown wants, that means the football program wants the SEC if/when a change has to be made.

South Building (UNC admin) is overseen by a chancellor (Kevin Guskiewicz) who understands football / athletics and isn’t just some egghead administrator who hates the athletic department (see Holden Thorp). So that helps, but UNC’s institutional tendency to hold overly tight to tradition, the faculty senate’s longstanding animosity towards the athletic department, and the NCGOP’s meddling are a toxic cocktail that could very well end up ruining UNC athletics forever.
I proudly took AFAM 040 at Carolina.

I was driving alot yesterday and listening to ESPNU and one peron had an idea that the remainder of the PAC 12 and the remainder of the ACC are more compatible from an academic standpoint and should merge as a mega conference. ESPN has the TV rights to both and this kinda makes sense. I actually think that's a good idea with East/West divisions. I know the remaining teams are sub-tier, but because of the shear number of schools in that conference, they can't be ignored. Can call it Pacific and Atlantic Coast Conference (PACC).
