Finally a farmer with a tractor came and cleared our road this afternoon. Just made it back. Being stranded in a mountain cabin in a snowstorm is romanticized in your head, but it felt like weeks instead of days.

In September of 1985 (first season of The Golden Girls) the youngest one was Rue McClanahan and she was 51 at the time of the show. They made her up to look like she was 60 because 51 is a bit young to be a widow retired to Miami. Second youngest was (believe it or not) "Sophia" played by Estelle Getty, the one who played Maude's mom. She was just 62. But she looked like she was in her early 80s. They made her up to look as old as possible

Cynthia Nixon is 55.
Kristen Davis is 56.
Ferris Bueller's wife is 56.

Yeah, they are all older now than Rue was then. But the rest of the Golden Girls were in their 60s (in real life.) On the show, all 4 women were moms, 3 were grandmoms, and one played a great-grandmom.

The point you are making is true. We look at age very differently. And with good reason. We are a country filled with old people. Median age for US citizens in 1985 was 31. Median age TODAY for US citizens, 39.
