CPAs and lawyers make money on billable hours so we’re task oriented to begin with. We lost no efficiency by working remote. Some of our older partners still don’t realize the impact of this. They are still trying to get the folks back in the office. Problem is, most of the young group don’t t want to go back to the office. Had a manager come to my office a few days back saying they are leaving and joining a NYC firm. I said are you moving to NYC? She said, no, it will be 100% remote even after Covid and I’m making NYC salary.

There is a rude awakening for some firm partners as to the effect of all this. Also a bad sign for NYC entertainment venues.

I think wage and rent arb will make many people choose to be away from city centers. The young people will still come to NYC to work and the visitor will still choose to turn midtown Manhattan into a shitshow of slow moving tourists. NYC needed a thinning out, a bit, and can afford to absorb it.
