I had to put a dog down myself one time. I loved that lab. He was old and had developed a bowel obstruction to go along with the myriad of other issues. I was tired of watching him suffer, and I knew it was selfish for me to keep him alive.

The vet we used closed for the holiday. I didn’t want to drive an hour for the emergency vet. I called a farmer and had him take an excavator over to our farm to dig a deep hole, and I took Oliver out there, placed him in the hole and put him down myself. It was one of the toughest things I have ever done.

He was maybe 3 years old there. I miss that dog even now

It was a shar-pei named Nae-Nae. I had her for 10 years and never left my side when I was home. I flew out on most Mondays and back on Fridays. She got into a fight with a coyote and was badly hurt. She had a couple of operations but couldn't recover. Loved that dog.
