Met Tony Tubbs, former heavyweight champ (till Tyson beat him in 2) last night at a meeting. He's 61 now but still a brick. Looks like a bigger Michael Irvin. Funny guy.

Speaking of heavyweights, Deontay Wilder fights tonight. I didn't know much about the guy until I heard Dan Lebatard interview him and they were saying he is the biggest man they have ever had in studio, then they talked about his punching power - so I watched a couple of Youtube videos of the guy and his right jab is a locomotive hitting a guy in the face.

I'm going to try to watch the fight tonight if I can figure out how to get it.

Heavyweight boxing will never return to its former glory. Guys that big with real talent are probably becoming linebackers where they can make a decent living without having their brains turned into oatmeal. Mike Tyson was the last hw with any real skill and even he would have been handed his ass by Ali, Frasier, or Foreman in their prime.

Growing up from Muhammed Ali and into Mike Tyson, boxing was great. Kind of lost interest in the sport with Lennix Lewis, and then MMA just exploded around that time.

I do have access to PPV so I'll try to watch the fight

I love the announcer as he does some wrasslin stuff as well and he is great.

Plus that hit, knocked that poor boy back to 4th grade. I think I saw his soul leave his body for like a second and then get sucked right back in. Good GAWD!!

I'm not so sure Ali, Forman or Frazier would've handed Tyson his ass, even in their prime...

I think Tyson was the best in his prime

but he never had a Frazier, Ali or Foreman level fighter in their prime to fight against him.

Tyson was basically Frazier on steroids. I think he would've taken Frazier down in the same way Foreman did, i.e., quickly and brutally. Ali was fast and savvy enough to make for an interesting fight with Tyson, esp. in his prime. Foreman was strong enough not to be overwhelmed by Tyson's power. I think Foreman in his prime could've taken Tyson, but it would've been a good fight. I think if Foreman hadn't retired after the Ali fight, had watched the tape and planned his strategy for the next one, he would've beaten Ali in a rematch.

Granted, Ali would've been well past his prime by then, but I think if Foreman hadn't retired after Ali beat him, he would've won the rematch and stayed heavyweight champ for many years. For fuck's sake, he was a legitimate heavyweight contender when he made a comeback in his 40's. In his 20's and 30's he would've been virtually unstoppable. Only a masterful and, IMO, once in a lifetime type of performance by Ali beat him. If he had learned from that defeat instead of retiring, I don't think anybody else would've beaten him for years if not decades...

On a different note, we just got back from southern Baja. Nice area. We flew into Cabo and rented a car and drove up to La Paz for some diving and swimming with whale sharks, visited a couple of little surf town on the eastern coast (several of which seemed populated by people who were going to Dead shows in the 60's and 70's), then popped over to the Pacific side to a little town called Todos Santos (home of the Hotel California, purportedly the one of Eagles fame) for a little mezcal sampling and whale watching. Good trip...
