I just finished a review with an employee where I had to tell him he isn't getting a pay raise for next year.

It wasn't performance based, it was because he makes too much money. So basically I had to tell him regardless of his performance, he won't make more money.

He was not happy. Can't say I blame him, but I wish I made what he made. I wouldn't be complaining at the moment.

I just flipped to the Duke vs. Stetson game, Duke was up by 50+, but the announcers weren't saying anything. I thought it was just a pause in the commentary, but the silence continued. I turned up the volume and still nothing. Turned to another channel and it blared. Turned back tot he Duke game and still silence. Finally one of the announcers said something. I guess they had just run out of things to say...

Update: Stetson just cut the lead to 53 with under five minutes remaining...

every guy that works for me makes more money than me. Its doesn't bother me, matter of fact I prefer it - I will never feel guilty about getting a nice raise as long as the guys I'm directing are making more money than me

the issue with this guy is that his previous boss (who got fired) gave him crazy pay raises that put him so out of the norm that this guy , if you include bonus, is pulling in literally 6 figures more than his equivalent counterpart.

So at his request we've scheduled a meeting with the V.P., to discuss. Its going to end badly for him though because since he has demanded a skip level meeting with a V.P. they have reviewed his past salary history and job code - and now they realize his job code is incorrect for the job he does which will result in a significant pay decrease on his bonus structure.

He really should have been more strategic in his thinking here. I was trying to give him hints but he wasn't hearing any of it. All he sees is that he's not getting his customary salary increase. This also unfortunately put a microscope on his work habits which are going to show he never comes into the office and have about 20 weeks out of the year he can point to where he actually contributes. Because of some HR issues, the V.P. felt it was necessary to have a conversation about it with a Senior V.P., who in turn brought it up with the Global V.P.

so for basically $1500 a year in salary pay that he didn't receive, this guy's actions will end up costing him about $30K in bonus - and he'll never get a chance to make it up unless he changes jobs.

I've talked about this before but there is a follow up

so about 2 or so years ago my wife hooked up with her best friend . On the whole while exciting to talk about, in reality was really awkward and generally a let down for my wife. She is still DTF with another woman if the right situation occurs but there just wasn't the chemistry she had hoped for. To cut to the chase, her friend just wasn't very good at it.

But from her friends standpoint it was a life changing event - and I'm not exaggerating it. She's gone straight up fatal attraction on her. All she talks about how that night has re-energized her and has spiced up her and her husbands sex life. OK, great no issues there, more power to you. Maybe it will happen again in the odd chance the planets align , we all get together (we only see each other maybe once a year).

This is where it gets boiling rabbit

She has decided that she hates living where she is, and is going to move closer to us. As in , we picked her up in Dayton last night at the airport because she has a job interview today where they are interviewing her for 2 jobs. She has been targeting jobs near us for about a year now - its started "near" was 3 hours away which was ok, we'd see her maybe a little more but a tolerable amount. But now, she's less than an hour away.

And that wasn't overly strange, I mean I get it - she wants to be near her best friend and get a new start on life, but the conversation she had with my wife set off some alarm bells.

She was like "and when <my real name> dies, I am going to divorce my husband and move in with you and we can just be together". Like its going to happen next week.

and I'm like wtf? first of all, her husband is 5 years older than me. I know one thing, I ain't drinking or eating anything she offers me.

Being in the hotel room with her last night for about 30 minutes made me realize just how crazy she is. No way do I want this woman popping in distance from me.

Also they want her to start in January, and her house is not ready to sell and will not sell for probably 3 months - which means she can't afford an apartment or buy a house while she is here. I'm pretty sure she is going to want to stay with us while she works all that out.

She all but made her mind she is taking this job. Even at a reduced salary just to get up here.

Let this be a lesson to you younger guys. Crazy finds a way. You can't contain it.

as a side note for those of you still pumping testosterone, she was reasonably cute back when it happened, but she's let herself go , has gained about 30 pounds and has a butch haircut. She'd fit right in at an Indigo Girls concert. She's also a chain smoker and drinks Jim Beam with ice. Hell, at the moment, she's more man than me.

The wife reconnected with a college roommate when she visited us out of the clear blue awhile back. A real Suzie Sorority Mean Girl type who apparently grew up, had a family, and changed her ways. A couple of girl trips ensued - no real problems, but I picked up hints. Then the last one to Sanibel Island...turns out 'Suzie' got hammered on the last night and aired every grievance she ever had against the missus and anyone they were connected to - R. Lee Ermey-style.

These things usually take care of themselves.

She is nice about it but remember I said that she was disappointed in how there was no chemistry the first time - at least for her, plus she is even less interested now that her friend has let herself go and gained like 30 pounds. Her comment to me when we left the hotel was "she looks just like her dad now". So nothing happened. And I don't think it ever will again.

However if she ends up staying with us while she tries to sell her house, I expect she'll want something to happen. Maybe I'll put her on a treadmill while she is here.

Honestly I'm not sure how my wife will react. Depends on if alcohol is involved.
