Re: MIT Engineers
Anybody have any opinions on smart tv's? Particularly on the operating systems they use?

Re: MIT Engineers
My TV is android and I wouldn't recommend it. Its too slow and constantly has issues with locking up
matter of fact I don't want a smart TV anymore, I'd rather get a regular TV and then an Amazon Firestick. The new ones have volume control on the remote, and they have always been bluetooth so its pretty easy to use, plus Alexa - I'm not big on the "Alexa, play Netflix" but it is convenient
My mom has a Samsung smart TV which is that semi-proprietary OS that doesn't have any apps. She never has any problems with it but it seems limited to me.

I like the stinky pinky but only up to the first knuckle, I do not want a GD thumb up there--I've told her multiple times and I always catch her when she tries to pull a fast one---it's my butthole for Chrissakes I'm gonna know--so cut out the BS.

Re: MIT Engineers
I think I've narrowed my choices down to a VIZIO that runs SmartCast (ie Google's other OS/Chromecast or whatever) and a TCL that runs on Roku

I think Vizio is a really good TV brand, especially for the cost

Re: MIT Engineers
I've been looking at reviews including some technical benchmarking type sites. It seems like the VIZIO is definitely slightly better, as far as the overall picture quality in most areas, but they seem to really like Roku as a tv OS and also the TCL despite being almost as good can be gotten for 25% cheaper.eCat wrote:I think Vizio is a really good TV brand, especially for the cost

Re: MIT Engineers
Bought a TCL 55" UHDTV last spring at Best Buy - 500+ then, I think the same one can be had for 380ish now. Awesome picture...UHD movies make my eyes bleed they're so perfect. SO much better than the Samsung it replaced.aTm wrote:I'm thinking about get a TCL set, which are based on Roku (and so I can make sure I participate in chinese espionage!)
So yeah, I'd recommend it.

Re: MIT Engineers
I'd consider buying this one, I like the idea local channels integrated into the home screen with the apps

Re: MIT Engineers
I have a sony smart tv and having issues with what I thought was the cable box but after having it replaced I still have the same issue
have it hooked up to hdmi 1-- with an amazon firestick on hdmi 2 and dvd player and playstation on the other two. for whatever reason the cable will kick off and my tv screen becomes nothing but java script. I can reset the input and get back to cox programming then couple hours late it does it again. I replaced the first cable box because we couldn't get off the javascript--new cable box we can reboot to get back to programming--but it has to be the tv--2 separate cableboxes shouldn't produce the same issue- went down to cox and no one had ever heard of the issue I'm having. --maybe reprogram the sony back to factory setting will do it

there is a setting in TV's about SMART HDMI - where the HDMI signal from the box tells the TV to turn on or switch over. I wouldn't think that is the problem, but I'd check it out anyways just in the off chance its a simple fix

Re: MIT Engineers
well I'm ruined
Hedge has been touting back pack blowers for a few years.
Finally had a chance to pick up a Ryobi 175mph on the cheap. Its a complete piece of shit but now I can't go back to the hand held, so while my head says to buy a Stihl like my other bullet proof items. The Ryobi runs but its got problems, which is what you get when you buy something on the cheap.
but....
I really like the 210mph Husqvarna 150bt and that's what I really want, but if turns out to be a piece of shit too I'm going to be pissed. So I should buy the Stihl but I want that bad ass Husqvarna

Re: MIT Engineers
I ended up buying the TCL over the Vizio. $200 cheaper, plus testing them out the Roku based TV definitely seemed both more intuitive and made the SmartCast system on the VIZIO feel sluggish.

Re: MIT Engineers
I think Husqvarna is a quality product...
I tried to start the piece of shit weedeater I bought last year, it wouldn't crank, only used it a couple of times, took it down to the repair shop, they said forget it, it's a piece of shit. So I go to get another one and I ended up getting a battery powered one. I was hesitant b/c I figured it wouldn't have the same power as a gas one, but it turns out it's pretty damn close. And you just pop the battery in and pull the trigger and it goes. No more mixing the gas, pulling the string, none of that shit, it's like the Tesla of weedeaters. Battery lasts about 40 minutes, and then it's time for a beer and let the battery charge (takes about 30 minutes). They also said the battery would work for multiple other products, blower, chainsaw, lawn mower, the works. I've got two good blowers but I'm sure they'll crap out like they all do at some point. I don't even have a chainsaw but with this battery I'm liable to get one just to use the battery. Might even buy another battery so I can just pop another one in and keep working while the other one charges. I was skeptical when I bought it, figured I could return it if I didn't like it, but this has been a great purchase. Not sure if the power level would be the same with other products, but for the weedeater, it's great...

Over the weekend mine turned dark in the corners and contrast and brightness had no effect. Customer support said this was common and suggested I increase the wattage in the viewing room ("you need bright rights..that make it better")aTm wrote:I ended up buying the TCL over the Vizio. $200 cheaper, plus testing them out the Roku based TV definitely seemed both more intuitive and made the SmartCast system on the VIZIO feel sluggish.

Re: MIT Engineers
Unless you spend a fuckton on an OLED where each pixel has its own lighting, you will have darkspots in the corners.bluetick wrote:Over the weekend mine turned dark in the corners and contrast and brightness had no effect. Your TV is edge lit, unlike the one I bought which has full array backlighting. In yours, the light that shines on the back of the LCD pixels comes from lights lining the edges of the panel. These TV's almost always have slight dark spots in the corners. If its gotten worse suddenly, it may be a physical issue with the backlighting, or Im guessing somebody may have messed with the brightness/backlight settings in the picture settings on the tv to a setting a where the issue suddenly stands out. You said you messed with the brightness/contrast. What about the setting named "backlight?"

My Sony 4K hasn't had even a hint of problems 3 years later.
