We have friends here from SA. It's been like this for awhile. The one dude who ran one political party, maybe ANC, coined the slogan, "One Boer, one bullet." My friend's parents still live there and it's pretty much defend yourself out in the country and don't stop for redlights in the cities. Pretty much what Prof thinks America is on the verge of becoming.

I went to Camden new jersey to work with a company around 2002. They told me the 3rd shift operators had permission to run red lights because if you stopped at one you got shot at.

So you took the seats and carpeting out, then drove a different car to Fort Wayne to get the new-to-you seats for the one you left at home? That's not as good as you driving a seat-less car to Fort Wayne...

It is not a take to Fort Wayne vehicle.

so again, this whole honest debate in gun control issue comes up.

I'm listening to a Florida Congressman on the radio this morning and he is voicing his frustration with the lack of action in congress in the wake of the Parkland shooting

His frustration stems from the fact that, in his words, the large number of people in this country want backgrounds checks and no one is doing anything about it. Its been a month since the Parkland shooting and we've seen no action.

OK, on the surface to someone only casually involved with this and says to themselves, we have to do something to prevent another shooting like Parkland I can see where they'd agree with this guy, but here is the problem. Cruz purchased a weapon legally - meaning he had a background check.

A national background check would have done nothing to prevent the Parkland shooting. Matter of fact, a national background check would not have prevented most if any of the mass shootings that have so much notoriety. We do not have a problem in this country with felons engaging in mass shootings.

Almost all these people fit a profile where they are mentally disturbed in some meaningful way but have no record that would prevent them from legally purchasing a gun.

So in this case, its yet another situation where a people exploit the deaths of these kids to push their agenda when there is no connection to their proposal actually solving the problem.

An even bigger concern to me here is that when you focus on mentally ill people it goes beyond an NRA talking point. I'm certain that mental health advocates and even the ACLU would step in to say we can't create legislation that denies people with a right to privacy (in the age of HIPPA) to make this publicly available. So while we all agree there are people that should have access to guns - and identifying these people IS a solution to preventing these types of shootings, Americans right to privacy overrides that safety issue.

but Bump stocks...seriously? Does anyone thinks that will make a difference. This is the kind of nonsense that just preys on the American public , and to be honest, if that is the gun control advocates choice to invest in and burn goodwill, its a horrible strategic decision on their part.

"First thing I did when I got mine was buy a 1/2 gallon of rust proofer, crawled underneath and put 3 coats of paint on anything that was exposed. I don't have rust issues on the frame, I do have a few rust spots on the body that I have treated and will bondo when the weather gets warm. "

I have multiple rust issues

rear shock had to be welded back to the frame--I gave the truck to my son for 5 years and switched him cars when he drove to Colorado. he has our Honda accord 2001. the body has rusted through below the passenger door a strip maybe the size of a nerf football--that's the biggest reason I'm not particularly enthusiastic to dump money in it. I don't see any other weak spots after I got the shock rewelded back to the frame but i'm not an expert. I can stil drive it but I have a manifold leak and a throttle body issue. in poor condition this thing with 250K still goes for 1K--not sure how much effort I want to put in it to get it to fair conditon

Nissan had a similar issue with frame rust and some company developed an after market frame rail kit which was actually affordable.

When I started looking for a Toyota truck I figured I'd be buying one with an issue of rust so I talked to a local welding shop that specialized in auto body type repairs. The going rate for a full frame restore was $1200.

If I found the right truck I would have paid $1200 because you can find strong engine Toyotas with rusted frames for $1200-$1500 all day long. $3K into it is still a bargain to me.

Luckily I found one with no frame rust issues other than surface. A day with a wire brush and rust paint will slow that down. I'll just spend $50 on the paint and crawl underneath each summer.

You don't even need a bump stock to make a semi behave that way. A piece of string and a belt loop and you can make it do that.

Identifying people who are mentally ill AND are likely to commit mass murder and keeping them away from guns is indeed the only rational approach to preventing mass murder. But nobody can figure out how to do that.

It can't be applied to people are clinically depressed. Just because a person is going through a divorce and is taking prozac does not make them a threat to commit mass murder.

If a person admits to his or her therapist that he is having homicidal thoughts, yes there are privacy laws that usually protect that communication. But there are already legal exceptions to patient confidentiality. In most states, if a patient says in counseling that they are planning a homicide, a suicide, or committing child abuse - and recently, elder abuse - the counselor has a legal obligation to report it to law enforcement, HIPPA or no HIPPA. The problem with therapists reporting even homicidal thoughts is people who need help controlling their emotions will stop going to professionals to get help.

Perhaps the current NICS system could be modified so that a licensed, qualified mental health professional could make an entry into the database for a person that they have personally examined, and based on that examination, the therapist considers that person to have a significantly elevated threat for committing murder. So when a person is thus flagged, they can't pass the NICS, and therefore can't get a gun. The would-be-buyer would need to go back to therapist to get the flag removed, or find another therapist to remove the flag, before they could get a gun.

If a crazy person thinks he will get reported to authorities for what he says to his therapist, odds are he doesn't see a therapist - or if he does, he withholds his true feelings.

At least here in Georgia, if you are hunting, you have to have a plug in your semi-auto shotgun which limits the magazine capacity to three shells. That plug is often just a homemade short piece of dowel, worth ten cents. No dowel, get arrested and pay a hefty fine. So if you have a string and belt loop worth ten cents as a homemade bump stock, get arrested and pay a hefty fine. I don't see much difference.
