Is there any real possibility in your mind that it might be that I would have trouble affording lunch?

my daughter brought up Oklahoma tonight - which I thought was odd but they have been sending her letters and flyers all summer - my first response was why would you want to go to a shithole college in a shithole town?

but then I started looking at the programs they have and its a much better school than I could have imagined. Something like 800 scholars so if those kids are choosing the school, something must be going on there.

still...Norman, Oklahoma. Who can get excited about that?

OUs entire recruiting strategy revolves around getting NMS’s to go there. Basicslly if you are a finalist, apply to OU and declare your college choice as OU youve got $40k coming your way.

I'm sure money is a huge part of it, but I'd hope these kids would put more into the thought process than just free tuition.

Have you ever had the thought "I want to live in Oklahoma for 5 years"?

yea, that's what I don't get..that's a pretty big hurdle to overcome but yet they have 800 scholars there on campus.

Part of it is also focus on that specific group. They target them and make them feel wanted and tailor their programs toward them, then market it to them and that helps a lot too.

Part of the reason why is so that they can then say that they have X amount or the most merit scholars enrolled and use that as the basis for their general recruitment. In all the years we were in the Big 12, I never saw an OU commercial that came on during a sporting event that didn't make how many national merit scholars they had as the key factoid they gave about the school in their advertisement.

I suspect that what you find is that other, more presitigous schools, dont necessarily target that demographic so hard (like OU's main rival, Im guessing, for most of the kids they get, the University of Texas) is because National Merit Scholars are overwhelmingly suburban and white, and so they don't go so hard for them as they want to fill out other demographic factors.

A&M goes after them too though, but yea I can see the diversity issue .

you do well on one test and a handful of schools throw money at you. Not really fair to the kids that work hard and do well but don't hit the number.

I suspect any town with a state school of the size and resources of OU has plenty of things do for college kids. I mean, you could say "who would want to spend 4 years in some small town in Alabama or Mississippi", but from everything I've heard, Tuscaloosa or Oxford would be a great place to spend 4 years as a college student...

I really know nothing about this but Reddit is eat up with it lately.

Apparently EA has released a new highly anticipated star wars game that cost $60 but in order to get the full experience of the game, you have to either invest 5,160 hours of time in the game to unlock features or can purchase them for an additional $2100.

and people are losing their shit over that online - people being people who play video games.

EA had offered refunds for people who pre-ordered the game, but then word got out about how shitty the game was , they removed the refund option from their website forcing people to call in.

My son plays several games on STEAM but has pretty much given up Xbox. He told me all his friends moved to Sony and he doesn't want to buy one.

That's about the extent of my console gaming knowledge at this point.

Havent heard about this, but I'm sure EA went about their business in the shittiest, most arrogant way possible. I like how people buy that shit and then whine about it, though. Stop sending them your money morons.

I'm so far removed from it I don't really care but it would seem that EA has turned into a very dislikeable company to the gaming community.

One person did make a comment about how all cable providers are going to be exactly like this if net neutrality is taken away.
