Another story about libs seeking to oppress free speech. Disregard the fake news headline.

Liberals oppressing free speech is hardly news, much less fake news. It's like "the sky is blue" news.

I think we had a discussion months back about the BLM's actions leading to this. When cops die from peaceful protesting, you have a limited shelf of having free reign in the public domain.

free reign in the public domain

that should the name of an album or concert tour

I heard a bit on this morning. I have a feeling he'll be walking that back..then again, he's old and financially set. He may just be in GFY mode to anyone that bothers him.

Now had he said 40 years, we can talk about that.

I get why it happened and I can't say that in her place I'd do it differently, but what I'm about to type does show the hypocrisy of some people.

Ashley Judd, among others, has no problem speaking out about Trump - especially when it concerns his pussy grabbing comments and perception of disrespect toward women, yet one of the most powerful men in Hollywood attempts to rape her and she keeps her mouth shut about it.

How many women were raped because clear conscience activist for women rights Ashley Judd kept her mouth shut?

Maybe someone else posted this on here already. I don't remember.

I guess this means the end of any jokes about women sleeping their way to the top in Hollywood...

Back to the Vietnam documentary (I still haven't finished, one more to go), I found it amazing, although I guess I shouldn't have, that the majority of Americans (if we're to believe whatever poll Ken Burns was using) felt the students got what they deserved at Kent State. I don't know how they framed the question in the poll and I don't remember the exact wording they used when they said it during that segment of the episode, but that's pretty much what it amounted to, whether it was "the national guardsmen were justified" or "they got what they deserved", however you want to say it, that was perception of close to 60% of the people polled. Clearly the majority is not always right and the cynic in me says the majority is rarely right, but that's another rant.

At any rate, I wonder how people will look back on this NFL protesting 50 years from now (if they even look back on such a non-event as this at all), if they will just shake their heads at the lock-jawed "patriotism" of the people who are so upset about these players kneeling. At any rate, the point is, the popular opinion at any given moment in history is very likely to be regarded with astonishment and disbelief by the very children and grandchildren of those who held those opinions. Doubtful that many people care about what future generations may think of their opinions, and they'll be dead by then, anyway, but still...

well its context -

you see students but the nation saw hippies who burned down a building and cut fire hoses when they tried to stop, the nation saw kids on campus whose protest turned violent.

The nation saw a governor who police response was inadequate to the situation and called in the national guard.

Back then you had the Weatherman, Black Panthers, no shortage of militant counter culture groups aligning themselves to the mantra of any means necessary - and you had the riots nation wide following the MLK's shooting fresh in the mind of Americans

I bet if you took a poll today and asked if the police should be allowed to use lethal force against Antifa if they begin violent protesting, the polls would mimic the Kent State one.

The NFL protesting I believe will be a forgotten blip on the radar of anything because nothing significant will come out of it. At the end of the day players will choose multi million dollar contracts over their principles, fans will go back to cheering once the emotion dies down and ESPN and the NFL will know that any encouragement of this agenda in the future - at least until the demographics of this country change - is bad for their bottom line.

No doubt. Polls are out there that pretty much equate Antifa with the KKK and neo-Nazis, which is pretty astounding itself. Antifa has a body count of zero whereas the Kluxers and Nazis can boast some pretty high numbers of victims lynched, gassed, or otherwise gruesomely murdered.

Suffragettes routinely got their heads split open, war protesters routinely got their heads split open - singing hymns, shouting slogans of flower power, peace, love and understanding notwithstanding, lefty pacifists (now referred to as snowflakes) who organized protests have been getting their ass handed to them for generations. Now comes a relatively small group of black-clad punks calling themselves anti-fascists who claim to want to slug back at these occasions. For that and several hundred overturned trash cans Fox News and their ilk have labeled them a terrorist organization on par with ISIS.

yea , thank god for that. I hope the next one that gets ready to sling a chain at someone gets a bullet. Besides, if they are relatively small, no one is going to give a shit anyways. Just some worthless part of society, much like the others who preach violence against peaceful protest.

what you can't differentiate is that just because I don't have the same vitriol for a KKK or a neo-Nazi (I'd like to know the body count of Neo Nazis, btw) doesn't mean I don't want them to suffer the same fate.

The issue is when they pick up a bike chain, bat, gun , whatever - its already addressed and for the most part they have enough sense to know, based on past experience , when the police show up, you don't fight back. When is the last time you heard of a mayor of a city telling the police to back down if KKK or Neo Nazi protestors get violent? At the same time, the media is unsympathetic to whatever their cause is (as they should be) but also uncaring as to whether as American citizens their civil rights are being abused. Because their message is one of hate against their beliefs, they aren't going to look at them with a unbiased eye. The pendelum swings for Antifa because its easy to see them as being Anti-Trump and fighting for what they perceive to be social justice. Really they're just assholes who want to fight in the street against people they hate...hiding their faces like cowards and using sheer numbers to overwhelm the people they line up against.

These Antifa rocket sicentists have decided that violence is the only solution to justice and the police are in on it against them too.

I was already kinda down on Nixon due to Watergate and my reading of Hunter Thompson, but I always realized that Thompson's writing was deliberately gonzo and incendiary, so I never really thought of Nixon as really terrible, but after hearing those tapes of him talking to various cabinet members, particularly Kissinger, those guys were just complete assholes who didn't give 2 shits about the lives of the soldiers nor the ostensible cause in Vietnam. It was purely a ratings game for them, and I suppose it's always been that way to a degree. But somebody made the point that after the Pentagon papers came out, that was when the public really started to regard the president and other elected officials with real distrust.

It's funny, b/c I grew up thinking that way, I guess b/c that's the attitude I gleaned from my parents and other adults in general, but the point was that before Nixon, the public generally thought of the president and congress as trustworthy and acting with the best motives and the best interests of the country in mind, whereas since Nixon, the opposite is true. That's a massive shift in the collective conscious of the nation and the culture in general, to the point that I think it's nearly impossible for us to understand how people felt about the government in all the generations before ours. We are just completely different from them, as individuals and as a culture...

for the most part I agree, but if you read E.B. Sledge's book The Old Breed, you'll see that as a marine he came to understand that our government was just going to keep throwing him into these battles with massive fatalities. They had no concern for his sacrifice or his life in the fight against the Japanese. Here is a kid that just survived hand to hand combat in a battle with a 70% injury/mortality rate , they send him back for some R&R for a week and then throw him back into another one. After the 4th time he realize his government is just going to keep using him until he dies. His survival is only a matter of luck.

The difference in Vietnam of course is the public was late in the game to understand what Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon knew to begin with. In a war of attrition Americans would tire of it first.
