Remember when flavor of the month Trudeau said immigrants will have a place in Canada?

looks like he didn't speak for all of Canada

-------------------

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada fears a huge surge in asylum seekers crossing the border from the United States, putting political pressure on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ahead of a 2019 election, sources familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The number of migrants illegally entering Canada more than tripled in July and August, hitting nearly 7,000. Haitians, who face looming deportation from the United States when their temporary protected status expires in January 2018, accounted for much of the inflow.

Two sources familiar with Canadian government thinking said citizens from El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras, who are slated to lose their U.S. protected status in early 2018, may also head north.

"There is concern we'll see a huge increase, mostly from Central America," said one source.

"The question is, which group is next, and how are we going to deal with it, and what is the impact on Canadians?" added the source, who requested anonymity given the sensitivity of the situation.

Most new arrivals are going to the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec, sparking protests from opposition politicians and anti-immigrant groups.

Trudeau's Liberals need to gain support in Quebec to offset expected losses elsewhere ahead of an October 2019 election.

Asked whether the Liberals were worried about losing popularity in Quebec, the source said: "Absolutely. That's a concern."

But if Trudeau clamps down too far, he risks tarnishing a long-cultivated reputation for openness and tolerance. He pointedly tweeted Canada's welcome of refugees after U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled a travel ban in January.

"The government is in a real quandary over this," said a third source familiar with official thinking.

First it was "Trump colluded with the Russians!" That lasted 6 months before dying out for want of evidence.

Then it was "Trump is a Nazi!" That lasted about lasted less than 2 weeks after Charlottesville. It's now running out of gas too.

Next up: "Trump is crazy and must be removed from office!" That will have even a shorter shelf life than the others.

Trump won the election. He is POTUS. You'll get another chance to remove him the next election in 2020. Until then, he isn't going anywhere.

people keep forgetting that the general public hates congress.

I hear these reporters and fellow congressmen scratching their head over Trump chiding Senator Flake, a senator who not only will not support Trump but wrote a book about it.

and they think Trump gives a damn about party unity, a party that paid to people to dig up dirt on him so he couldn't win? Trump is doing exactly what I wanted - calling out politicians from both sides who are worried about getting re-elected versus delivering on the platform agenda.

If McConnell can't deliver on healthcare repeal and a tax cut, then why should Trump give a fuck if he is the majority leader? He is an obstructionist just like the Democrats

Its why they have a below 20% approval rating and also why people who dislike congress have stopped listening to the media. Both keep pushing an agenda of what their vision should be, not how it really is or what the people want.

^This.

It will get REALLY interesting when the Congress passes a budget on the debt ceiling. Trump says, if it doesn't include funding for The Wall, he won't sign it. As eCat correctly stated, that is precisely why he was elected. That will be a moment of truth for everybody in Congress, both House and Senate, both Democrat and Republican. Trump isn't a member of the Swamp. He doesn't play their stupid games. If they don't meet this VERY easy, simple, reasonable, and relatively cheap demand, he will give the middle finger to the whole DC Establishment of both parties and go play golf until they get their minds right. He won't care if the government shutdown lasts a day, a week, a year, or a decade.

As long as the checks go out to all Federal Bureau of Prisons retirees, I am totally in favor of that.

I often wonder what would happen if a bunch of dogs got together and created a capitalist system. I can see a few poodles sitting around drinking drinks while a bunch of shepherds toil in the fields. Meanwhile the chihuahuas are telling everyone how lazy the shepherds are and that's why they have no dog-bucks.

Sounds like this Sherrif Joe guy is a real shitbag. It's no wonder Trump loves the guy so much. I guess when you're the president and you get the chance to align yourself with racism, civil rights violations, and disregard for the bill of rights, you've got to take it.

The Podesta Group belatedly filed several new disclosures with the Justice Department on Aug. 17 related to work the firm completed between 2012 and 2014 on behalf of a pro-Russia Ukrainian think tank.

Back in April, the powerful Washington lobbying firm run by Clinton ally Tony Podesta filed a document admitting its work for the pro-Russia European Centre for a Modern Ukraine may have principally benefited a foreign government. New disclosures revealed dozens of previously unreported interactions the firm made with influential government offices, including Hillary Clinton's State Department and the office of former Vice President Joe Biden, while lobbying on behalf of the center. Embattled ex-Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort failed to disclose his extensive lobbying efforts on behalf of the center at the time as well.

Anyone lobbying or doing public relations on behalf of foreign governments is required to register as a foreign agent in compliance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The Aug. 17 filings include short-form registration statements for six Podesta Group employees and an amendment to the firm's registration statement that includes a list of political contributions made by relevant employees throughout 2013.

A review of those donations shows both parties received cash from Podesta Group lobbyists.

The individual employee filings appear to be uniform and lawyerly, each describing what their services were supposed to entail as, "Research and analyze issues related to principal's organizational mission of improving ties between Ukraine and the West counsel on activities in Congress and executive branch and developments that relate to the principal's organizational mission; and maintain contact, as needed, with legislative and executive branch officials, members of the media, and NGOs." One of the filings is for Tony Podesta himself, who was a bundler for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. Tony and his brother John--Clinton's 2016 campaign chairman--co-founded the lobbying firm in 1988.

Last August, the AP reported that Manafort oversaw the lobbying efforts on behalf of the center carried out by the Podesta Group and Mercury, another high-powered firm. As the Washington Examiner noted in May, the Podesta Group was paid more by the think tank than Mercury -- the firms earned $1 million and $720,000 between 2012 and 2014, respectively.

At the time of the firm's retroactive filing in April, Politico reported CEO Kimberly Fritts "said in a statement that the firm relied on assurances from the think tank, the European Centre for Modern Ukraine, that it was not controlled or financed by a foreign government or political party. Based on that information, the firm disclosed its work to Congress rather than to the Justice Department."

Tony Podesta working for the Russians through their Eastern Ukrainian front company? Retroactive disclosure filings? Secret, previously undisclosed contacts? All while bundling for Hillary's campaign? Worked with the dark and sinister Manafort? Made seven figures?

Connect the dots, people. It's all right in front of you. All the evidence points straight to Hillary. Somebody in this cabal has a story to tell, and they are going to tell it when they get immunity. All it takes is one, and the rest will follow, and the whole conspiracy will come crashing down. Hillary will be in an orange jumpsuit/pantsuit by Christmas. Book it.

Lessee. Word is Mueller died at the end of July and his staff props him up like Weekend at Bernies. After they've cashed the last advance and they get bored with endless hours of porn and poker, they'll announce that their investigation is complete. Carter Page has to pay some overdue parking fines and that's about it. Oh - and something praising Comey, and a rebuke to the Trump campaign for forgetting several dozen contacts with Russians. Good night and good luck. That's all, folks.

Foreigners, however, have their uses. After the president trumpeted that the Dow surpassing the 22,000 mark was evidence of America’s resurgent greatness, The Wall Street Journal rather impertinently noted this: Boeing, whose shares have gained 50 percent this year and which accounted for 563 of the more than 2,000 points the Dow had gained this year en route to 22,000, makes about 60 percent of its sales overseas. Boeing has a backlog of orders for 5,705 planes, 75 percent going outside North America. For Apple, the second-biggest contributor (283 points) to this year’s Dow gain at that point, foreign sales are two-thirds of its total sales. Foreign sales are also two-thirds of the sales of McDonald’s, the third-biggest contributor (239 points).

Mark Perry of the American Enterprise Institute says that in the last 20 years the inflation-adjusted value of U.S. manufacturing output has increased 40 percent even though — actually, partly because — U.S. factory employment decreased 5.1 million jobs (29 percent). Manufacturing’s share of GDP is almost unchanged since 1960. “U.S. manufacturing output was near a record high last year at $1.91 trillion, just slightly below the 2007 level of $1.92 trillion, and will likely reach a new record high later this year.” That record will be reached with about the same level of factory workers (fewer than 12.5 million) as in the early 1940s, when the U.S. population was about 135 million. Increased productivity is the reason there can be quadrupled output from the same number of workers. According to one study, 88 percent of manufacturing job losses are the result of improved productivity, not rapacious Chinese.

George Will, formerly a fave of prof/toe/sardis et al, relegated to the back bench in the era of Team Trump. Sad.
