I wish you'd give your life for your friends. Or at least those people who use you only for your money who you think are your friends...

People who use me for my money? They must be chronically disappointed.
Sardis, did I get the symbolic end to Gran Torino you had in mind?

Yeah the final image of Clint lying there with outstretched arms was hard to miss.
What other things did you catch in the movie? This is the Bama thread after all, what better place to discuss pop culture.

Re: Alabama Crimson Tide
I caught the long-overdue reconciliation between Walt and Asians. He hated all minorities, but clearly reserved a special bitterness against Asians because of his experience in the Korean War.
But in this movie he began to see them as humans - no longer as the brutalizers but as the victims who needed protection from a strong guy like him. He was gravely disappointed in his own sons, and recognized his own shortcomings as a father. So he adopted Thao as a son figure, and spent time with him that he never did with his own sons.
The Gran Torino was the symbol of his final reconciliation with the Asians.

So he was more of a Jehovah figure than a Christ figure?

I didn't know you were a Jehovah's Witness.
BTW, congratulations to Portugal. Winning without Ronaldo was extraordinary. France winning it all would have been wrong on so many levels.

A lot of folks dismiss the Christian theme of the flick and just remember it for 'Get off my lawn!' with a shotgun.

That wasn't a shotgun. Looked like an M-1 rifle to me. One fine weapon the US Army and Marine Corps used in WWII and Korea.
We should probably show ourselves out quietly. AA is very particular about the sanctity of his thread. I don't want the poor guy to have an aneurism.

Re: Alabama Crimson Tide
My uncle said he kept an empty clip. When it emptied, it ejected, and made a pinging sound when it hit the ground. If you were surrounded and in a foxhole, the Germans would wait to hear that ping and then charge trying to catch you before you reloaded - so if you were pinned down, you pulled an empty clip outta your pocket and threw it and waited with your loaded rifle for them to charge. He said he never tried it, but he kept one in case he was "holed up".
I don't know if that's true or not. He was a drunkard.

Re: Alabama Crimson Tide
AA, I seem to remember that you are a pistol expert. I have a question:
I'm thinking about getting a new pistol before they become illegal after the election. I'm leading towards getting a Colt 1911 - as a sentimental historical memorabilia choice. I shot those when I was a lieutenant before the Beretta 9mm's. I was rather fond of those.
But I'm also thinking about getting a more modern 9mm that is very accurate.
What do you recommend?

Re: Alabama Crimson Tide
If it is an everyday carry, especially CCW, get something small. The Glock 30s .45 or Glock 33 (.357). I'm a big believer in Glock for everyday carry weapons. Very dependable.
If it's a nightstand gun the 1911 or Beretta is fine.
