about 4 months ago a windstorm came thru and knocked off a 13 foot long branch off of our cedar tree ( I measured it because I thought a straight piece of cedar might be worth something - its not)

at any rate, thinking it might be worth something, I got the chainsaw out and cleaned it up and asked my son to take all the branches away to our brushpile. So he thinks that means the 13 foot long piece. So he and his friend - a portly boy that's never met a donut he didn't like attempted to pick it up and carried it about 10 feet before dropping it and deciding it was too heavy to carry.

I didn't know this - but I was irritated they moved it into the middle of the yard where I mowed, so I went out there later, picked it up and hoisted it onto my shoulder , carried it to another tree and put it up against the tree.

My son was blown away the old man could do that.

That may have bought me a couple of years mileage of him not smarting off to me. We had a " if your feeling froggy , jump" moment about a year ago when I took his cell phone away from him. I had to put on a brave face because I was pretty sure he'd whip my ass just on endurance alone, but that limb moving moment took him down a few notches....at least until I fall and break my hip or something.

They could have carried it out, they're just too lazy and give up easy because they don't give a shit where the debris lies.

We, on the other hand, want it out of there so bad that we would risk a bad back and heart attack to get it out of there.

My great grandfather died shortly before I was born - he asked some friend to help him move a stove, they didn't show up, he got pissed and moved it himself and burst some shit in his head. Keeled over dead on the floor


but that stove was in the right place dammit.

Yes, lol, a wheelbarrow.

Although, depending on the course, walking 18 holes can be 5-7 miles or so. More if you're a bad golfer.

Golf carts are an abomination. You'd better have a handicap medallion in your car if you use a cart instead of walking.

I used to agree. Really. But my back is bad. It's either a cart or no golf. At this point, I chose the cart, but even with a cart, when the spasms start, sometimes I can't finish.

No handicapped placard, though....Yet.

The laminectomy surgery and rods were supposed to fix that. All lies. All it did was make things worse ...and with less mobility.

I have a lot of sympathy for a bad back. My dad has suffered from back problems his whole life and is essentially a cripple now. It's terrible to watch. He could only play as long as he did because of a cart so, in cases like that, I think carts are a great thing. However, I would wager that 80-90% of rounds these days are in carts and most of them are by people who could easily walk. A lot of the courses are to blame since they won't really facilitate walking but I wonder if that's mostly a response to the desire for carts from most players. Maybe it's just me and maybe I'm different. I don't ever drink when I'm playing and I appreciate the slow rhythm of the game. I can't play well when I'm rushing to the ball and then have to sit there and wait. And, playing badly is not fun.

I prefer walking. And, yeah, with some guys golf is an excuse to get plastered and race the carts to the next tee box and make the same bad joke at the ball washer. Heck, I see teenagers in carts at my course. It's kinda disgusting.

I can easily picture eCat's eyes narrowing when he saw the fallen cedar limb, greedily calculating what he could sell a single board for. Undoubtedly he was planning to plane and lathe it himself, putting his still narrowed eye close to the finished board to make sure there was no warping, and then finishing it off much in the same way Judge Schmales wanted Porterhouse to cream and buff his shoes...

Not exactly. The place I play is nearly the opposite of Bushwood. The inspiration for Bushwood is a place called Indian Hills in Winnetka very close to where I grew up. It is every bit as pretentious as you'd expect. Bob O'Link, where I play, is an all mens club that is extremely laid back and shit like that could get you kicked out. It's a great place.

Some of the older members at our club were pissed when the club didn't replace the full time clubhouse attendant who retired. God forbid they don't have a black guy to hand their shoes to for a shine. They have some part time help in there and still have two-three guys for carts and bags at all times though.

The problem I have with walking is that it kills my back and right ankle. Make the fat jokes and what not, but the distance isn't the problem. Walking on inclines with this bitch of an ankle is dicey at times, and carrying even an ultra light stand bag for 18 is hell now. I thought about getting one of those self propelled carts, but I don't want to have to deal with the hassle.

Sounds like the Chevy Chase's and Al Czervik's left Bushwood (Winnetka) and formed their own club. I wonder if they said "My father never liked you" as they bid their goodbyes. Great name for a golf club, BTW...

DS has to circumnavigate the course so as not to have to drive up any hills, as even the slightest of inclines would cause the tires to smoke, but not for lack of purchase...

I joined a pretty good club here in Greenville. Not one of the top courses here, but a small membership where there is hardly anyone on the course when I show up. It is on the foothills of the Blue Ridge so it is somewhat hilly. When I walk it is 3.5 hours, when I ride it is 2 hours, so if I am crunched for time I ride.

There are definitely guys like that in the club. One thing people always say about BOL is that half the members could get into any club in the world and the other half could only get into BOL. It's that second half that makes the place interesting. Good golf course, too, and a very high level of competition which is fun.
