And I'm saying it bluntly, that this administration is the greatest wet blanket to business, and progress and job creation in my lifetime. And I can prove it and I could spend the next 3 hours giving you examples of all of us in this market place that are frightened to death about all the new regulations, our healthcare costs escalate, regulations coming from left and right. A President that seems, that keeps using that word redistribution. Well, my customers and the companies that provide the vitality for the hospitality and restaurant industry, in the United States of America, they are frightened of this administration.And it makes you slow down and not invest your money. Everybody complains about how much money is on the side in America.
You bet and until we change the tempo and the conversation from Washington, it's not going to change. And those of us who have business opportunities and the capital to do it are going to sit in fear of the President. And a lot of people don't want to say that. They'll say, God, don't be attacking Obama. Well, this is Obama's deal and it's Obama that's responsible for this fear in America.
The guy keeps making speeches about redistribution and maybe we ought to do something to businesses that don't invest, their holding too much money. We haven't heard that kind of talk except from pure socialists. Everybody's afraid of the government and there's no need soft peddling it, it's the truth. It is the truth. And that's true of Democratic businessman and Republican businessman, and I am a Democratic businessman and I support Harry Reid. I support Democrats and Republicans. And I'm telling you that the business community in this company is frightened to death of the weird political philosophy of the President of the United States. And until he's gone, everybody's going to be sitting on their thumbs.

Modern Poverty Includes A.C. and an Xbox

When Americans think of poverty, we tend to picture people who can’t adequately shelter, clothe, and feed themselves or their families.

When the Census Bureau defines “poverty,” though, it winds up painting more than 40 million Americans — one in seven — as “poor.”

Census officials continue to grossly exaggerate the numbers of the poor, creating a false picture in the public mind of widespread material deprivation, writes Heritage Foundation senior research fellow Robert Rector in a new paper.

“Most news stories on poverty feature homeless families, people living in crumbling shacks, or lines of the downtrodden eating in soup kitchens,” Rector says. “The actual living conditions of America’s poor are far different from these images.”

Congress is tying itself in knots figuring out how to cut spending and bring down a $14 trillion national debt. Lawmakers might well take a much closer look at the nearly a trillion dollars spent each year on welfare even though many recipients aren’t what the typical American would recognize as poor and in need of government assistance.

I'll bet almost ALL of that 78% of those in poverty with air-conditioning have central air-conditioning in their unit, and not the box window units (owned by the tenant and not the landlord.) Air conditioning is pretty much as standard with new apartments as indoor plumbing. Its cheaper nowadays.

And don't misinterpret: I don't not want people to not have any of these things. All I'm saying is our definition of poor is very much skewed from what it used to mean and it's an insult to those who are really in poverty and wanting for food, clothing, shelter.

Note you used the operative word "NRA," not Republican. If it was an NRA rally, of course there were working class people there. They were almost all Democrats.

Understandable, since virtually all of the things done under this President (except for the auto bailout) were at one point in time Republican initiatives (taxes decreased, gun rights increased)

I haven't agreed with much of Hack's politics but I never knew him to sneer at those holding the short end of the stick. "Ridiculous"..all of those people he notices using food stamps. Where did THAT come from?

Fact is, I always figured he was somebody who gave some time to those who were down and out. And when others were taking some kind of fiendish glee over the growing unemployment numbers... I took his silence as a rebuke to that evil sort of poltical miasma.

Oh well. Maybe he just had a bad day.

Some people seem to have such an unrealistic and patronizing -- almost cartoonish -- view of what "poor" people are like. You listen to them and you sense condescension, superiority. Their expectations of the poor are so low, it's downright insulting. It's like they each picture themselves as Princess Di among the starving African tribes.

But this isn't Africa. And our poor are, for the most part, very capable of helping themselves. I know, because I've been there. I've known what it is like to walk past a McDonald's, smell the food and think how awesome it would be if I just had enough money to buy a small order of french fries. I've answered the bill collectors' midnight calls, threatening to have the sheriffs at my door in the morning. And I guess I still have a place in my heart where I fear going back there, if our politicians fuck the country up badly enough.

I'm sure some people don't fear that. That would explain the detached, nonchalant attitude many of them seem to have. Sure, just throw some more money at the problem. We've got plenty of it, after all. And, heck, if we don't give some of it away, just think how guilty we'll feel. We'll sleep so much better. And what could be easier than just letting the government handle it? We won't even have to break a sweat. And if it doesn't work, we'll still be okay. We tried, right? We voted for the right party. We can hold our heads up high and act all superior in front of our friends down at the country club.

I remember MANY times if my wife AND I didn't eat penut butter and jelly for supper, we weren't hungry. US Navy E-3, $500.00 on the 1st and 15th, rent $400.00/month, and a 1 yr old little girl with so many food allergies it cost me a fortune in a special formula for her to eat. But I didn't have a car payment. We didn't go to movies. We didn't eat out. Clothing was on a need basis. We carried a calculator to the COMISSARY. Food stamps were never thought of.

This can't be right. It says WYNN was trading at $48 a share when Obama took the oath of office....and today it traded at $162.

I'm terrible at math. Is that a double or a triple over that period of time?

Wynn Resorts Ltd.'s (WYNN) second-quarter profit more than doubled as strong gambling revenues lifted the bottom line.

The better-than-expected results come as Wynn continues to benefit from it's businesses in the gambling mecca of Macau, where the company's revenue jumped 37% and adjusted operating profit grew 45%.

Fitch Ratings earlier this month upgraded the luxury casino operator, as revenue from Las Vegas rose 23% while the segment's adjusted profit more than doubled. Overall, casino revenue rose 37%.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected a $1.03 per share profit on $1.28 billion in revenue.

LMAO. Great stuff. Wynns own press releases talk about how the company is doing better than at any time in their history.

And, for the record, I did try to immediately point out that my observations were made at a bargain grocer.

My comment wasn't meant to draw any conclusions. It was merely an honest observation. And I stand by it. It's astounding the number and diversity of people in my area who seem to be on foodstamps. (20% in my state are on food stamps, according to the article I posted.) I doubt that many of them live in my immediate neighborhood -- but close enough to shop at the store I shop at.

I can't help how idiots react to what I say -- or how they misinterpret it, like saying that I claimed everyone is on food stamps (never said it) and everyone who is on food stamps is cheating the system (never said it). I try to stick to the facts and I do not make shit up. If the truth makes you uncomfortable, then that's just too fucking bad. It's not my problem.

I feel bad about that whole food stamp saga, so I propose a do-over.

I'm almost surprised when I go to the grocery store now and see someone paying for food with something other than a food stamp card. It's ridiculous. And they're almost always buying things that I routinely avoid in lieu of cheaper alternatives.

That's interesting, Hack. I never notice people using food stamps at my Krogers...maybe I'll keep a watchful eye out for that sort of thing. Around here you have to venture out to the bargain and thrift stores to find that kind of activity.

Anyway, sorry to hear about how things have deteriorated in your neighborhood. Although I must say, you don't appear to be all that sympathetic. Is it because they are buying brands that you consider to be too good for their predicament? Understandable - that kind of sentiment has gained a lot of ground the last generation or so. Hah - do you remember my story not long ago about finding that 8-track tape of Welfare Cadillac? (It occurs to me that there aren't any good songs about Corporate Welfare - LOL).

Keep us up to speed on the food stamps - that's a disquieting situation. You can bet I'm going to pay more attention next time I go buy groceries.
