Posted a story about the Chicago warehouse a year ago.

Just saw the 'Bama thing today.

As a general rule, I am always in favor of picking on Alabama except for Lee County.

Meanwhile, while a racist cops says racist things and Chicago PD locks up minorities in a warehouse under legally suspect circumstances...

Boy, 16, killed and 8 people wounded in shootings across Chicago

A 16-year-old boy was killed and another teen was left in serious condition in a shooting in the South Chicago neighborhood.

The two were among at least nine people wounded or killed in shootings across the city Monday -- on the Northwest, West and South sides. The violence comes after a long Fourth of July weekend that saw 10 people die and 55 others wounded in gun violence.

The 16-year-old was shot about 5:30 p.m. Monday in the 8000 block of South Paxton Avenue when a gunman jumped out of a red vehicle and opened fire, hitting him and a 17-year-old boy, according to Officer Thomas Sweeney, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.

The 16-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead. The 17-year-old suffered a wound to the back and was taken in serious condition to South Shore Hospital, Sweeney said.

No one was reported in custody Tuesday morning.

After the shooting, residents young and old gathered as night fell. Three homes on the street, single-family houses on one side and two-story apartment buildings on the other, were roped off with crime tape.

A neighbor across the street said a bullet flew through his first-floor apartment window. "Everybody's OK. Thank God," the man said.

The shooting took place in an alley between two houses. At least six evidence markers were placed on the ground near the gate leading to a backyard.

Several residents sat on the front stoops of their homes, watching quietly as uniformed officers and detectives interviewed residents along the block. They declined to speak to a reporter.

A resident across the street tiptoed outside with a broom. Another bullet had shattered the lower pane of glass on a security door outside the red painted front door. She gingerly swept glass bits from inside the entryway, gathering it all into a pile on the front step.

"Just fireworks," an officer reassured. "That's why we're not jumping up."

About two hours after the shooting, two more people were shot just five blocks east. Two men, ages 23 and 25, were standing in the 7900 block of South Bennett Avenue when a gunman emerged from a gangway and opened fire, said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman.

Both men were shot in the back and taken to hospitals in good condition, Zala said. The 23-year-old man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and the 25-year-old man to Jackson Park Hospital.

In other shootings:

• About 10:50 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The man was standing in the 3000 block of West Cortland Street when a group of people inside a blue SUV drove past and fired shots, police said. The man was hit in the right thigh and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

• A 35-year-old man was shot during an argument in South Austin. The man got into a argument with another person in the 5200 block of West Van Buren Street when the person pulled out a gun and shot the 35-year-old in the back of the shoulder, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

• About 8:55 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was shot in the 500 block of East Marquette Road in Woodlawn. Police said the boy was walking on the sidewalk with a group of people when two gunman approached on foot and opened fire. The boy was shot in the left knee. He was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

• A 25-year-old man walked into Mercy Hospital and Medical Center about 5:20 p.m. Monday after he was shot in the foot. The man told police he was in the 200 block of West 63rd Street in Englewood when someone walked up to him, started a conversation and then pulled out a handgun and opened fire. The 25-year-old man was shot in the left foot as he tried to run away, police said. Initially, the man said he was shot at the 63rd Street Red Line station but later changed his story after police could not find a crime scene there.

• About 3:10 p.m., a 43-year-old man was shot in Bronzeville. The man was in the 4200 block of South Indiana Avenue when he heard gunfire and was shot, police said. He walked into Provident Hospital with a gunshot wound to his back and was later transferred to Stroger Hospital where his condition stabilized, police said.

No one was in custody for any of Monday's shootings, police said.

Update on 7-21-2015 -- The 16-year-old who was killed on Paxton Avenue has been identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Abayomi Okanlawan, of the 7900 block of South Merrill Avenue. That incident took place in the 8000 block of South Paxton Avenue, a different address than had originally been reported.

From the famous teabagger, Alan Dershowitz....

“All of this has been said by Obama himself,” Dershowitz explains. “When Obama first set out the red lines, he specified 24/7 inspections – we didn’t get that. He set out that Iran would never have nuclear weapons – we didn’t get that. He set out to end the nuclear facility at Fordow – we didn’t get that. He has crossed his own red lines at least three times.”
Asked if he believes that President Obama is a failed leader, Dershowitz, who supported the president in both elections, replied, “I think on the Iran deal he is a failed leader.” Dershowitz continued, “I think this will be his legacy in terms of international relations and I think it will result in an increase in the nuclear arms race, an end to anti-nuclear proliferation, an increase in the likelihood of war, and a greater gulf between Israel and the United States. All of which he promised would not happen.”
“If you judge president Obama by his own standards, he is an abject failure when it comes to international relations. Forget about my standard or yours. By his own standard he is an abject failure when it comes to dealing with Iran.”

I generally like Dershowitz - he was one of O.J. Simpson's defense attorneys and wrote a pro-O.J. book - but he has tunnel vision with respect to Israel and has been widely denounced in academic and public policy circles as an apologist for the Israel lobby.

But . . . he is a big Hilary supporter.

Nice month-old story. Meanwhile, the indignation is reserved for abuse of power under color of authority:

Jonathan Sanders, Unarmed Black Man, Allegedly Strangled To Death By Mississippi Cop

http://www.theroot.com/articles/culture ... gedly.html

As the deaths of Sandra Bland and Sam Dubose continue to capture national attention—both serving as undeniable evidence of police brutality, selective outrage and the ability of police officers to lie through their teeth even with video evidence to contradict their stories—the police killing of 39-year-old Jonathan Sanders in Stonewall, Miss., has largely flown under the radar.

According to witnesses, Sanders, a father of two and a horse trainer, was riding in a single-person buggy drawn by his horse, Diva, the night of July 8 when he saw Officer Kevin Herrington allegedly harassing a man at a gas station. Sanders yelled out for Herrington to leave the man alone, to which, according to witnesses, Herrington replied, “I’m going to get that n--ger.”

Less than a half hour later, Sanders would be dead.

According to witnesses, Herrington’s unexpected approach down the long, winding road startled Diva, who then threw Sanders from the buggy and ran away. As Sanders tried to stand, Herrington allegedly pulled Sanders by the strap of a headlamp Sanders was wearing that had slipped down around his neck, and allegedly choked him for approximately 20 minutes.

Sanders’ last words, according to witnesses: "I can’t breathe."

Why? Do ALL black lives matter or not? Do black lives that end violently at the hands of other blacks in inner cities matter or just those whose deaths might by attributed to white racism? Why ignore 1,000 of the former for every one of the latter?

The reason for the indignation is that "guy-gets-drunk-shoots-wife-after-fight," "criminals-shoot-each-other-over-drug-deal," "dirtbag-kills-senior-citizen-in-mugging," and the like - which covers most black-on-black, brown-on-brown, red-on-red, yellow-on-yellow and white-on-white crimes - are random acts of stupid people and are going to happen as they've always happen.

But in the case of Law Enforcement, before a department even puts you on the street, (LA Deputy Sheriffs go through):

*9 months of pre-screening and tests

*20 weeks of Sheriff's Academy training

*2 years of probationary officer status working in the county jail fulltime

*Periodic state-certified Peace Officer Standards & Training

*Hundreds of hours of continuing education

So you're not talking about some drunk/dopehead or HS dropout or ghetto/barrio gangbanger committing mayhem.

You're talking the highest trained, most generously paid, Law Enforcement Professionals doing crap like:

Shooting unarmed people in the back and then being caught on video planting weapons on them,

Using illegal choke holds to kill unarmed cigarette peddlers,

Strangling unarmed horse carriage drivers to death with their own helmet straps,

Shooting unarmed, handcuffed prisoners in the back while being video taped . . . "

And yes, that stuff is more galling, because it involves not only a crime against the victim, but a crime against the social contract and public trust.

For what it's worth, I'm just as pissed - and have posted so here - when whites suffer abuse from the hands of law enforcement.

So black lives that are cut short by white cops matter more about 1000% than black lives cut short by black shooters. Okay.

I really don't get your moral calculus. But at least you're honest about it.

Puter, the namesake of this thread, was a vocal critic of police overreach. A conservative, he railed against (illegal) stops, seizures, and no-knock raids. Or knock-and-talk. Or "safety checks." Roadblocks etc. Stuff that appeared to run counter to the Constitution.

Seemed like he got a lot of support, and there was surprisingly little mention of Chicago. heh

This happens a lot around here, got to read local news to find out about it though. Also been several kids (under 8yrs/black and brown) done the same way.

..She was sitting on her porch, playing two-handed spades with a neighbor, when shots rang out about 11 p.m. Monday in the 900 block of Proctor Street. One of the stray bullets came through the porch’s screen, hit Martin in the back and killed her.

Steven Daniel, the man Martin was playing cards with when she was shot, told Channel 2 he thought she was having a heart attack at first.

“When she got hit, she fell back in her chair,” he said. “Like she got stung by a bee or something like that.”
