It was a horrible decision to bring it back. We're about to see the difference in "pledged money" vs "actual money" - a difference that will be vast. And Ray Watts has told them they have to get the money.

I passed the celebrations rare yesterday. Maybe 20 people.

yea I was thinking what are the odds 4 years from now when they haven't had a winning season that the money from outsides sources dries up and goes away

That, and the funds raised are "pledges" - no actual dollars. UAB draws around 20k per game (and many are free tickets).

It's just all so ridiculous.

how are you going to recruit decent kids with that anvil hanging over the program anyways?

The football team will be having bake sales and car washes

Just schedule Bama every year. The payout is worth the beating.

Nope. No profit in that for Bama.

They were bowl eligible when they ended their program. All schools that don't share money should have their own Board of Regents. If they have the same board of regents, then they should share money.\

Wonder how the program would be doing now if the Alabama trustees hadn't killed Jimbo Fisher's head coaching deal with Alabama-Birmingham? Worked out great for Fisher.

Since John Elway has taken over football operations in Denver, the Broncos have:

somehow and someway made the playoffs with Tim Tebow playing quarterback
successfully courted Peyton Manning
gone to the Super Bowl
started enforcing a fart tax in meetings

One of those factoids is more impressive and unheard of than the rest of them (and no, I'm not talking about making the playoffs with Tebow).

That would be the "fart tax," which I promise you, is not something I'm making up. Well then, how do we know this so-called fart tax?

Von Miller, the team's star linebacker, was happy to talk all about it:

Hard to believe you'd get fined for something like that in an NFL locker room. Those must've been some bad farts, but I suspect that the perp must've been taking rather too much delight in the suffering he was causing. That's the only reason I can think of for the fine...

1. I don't think sharing or a separate board is necessary. I don't think, for example, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi should get a share of Texas A&M's budget or a separate Board for something like athletics. UAB was a part of UA until the 1960's. A power play by some UA faculty at the Birmingham extension center fought for separation so that they could become Deans and Program Chairs, etc, and not answer to their then current bosses in Tuscaloosa.

2. UAB was bowl eligible. They have been several times in their history and have been passed over. The reason? They don't travel.

3. The Jimbo story was interesting. UAB was hemorrhaging cash. A few boosters and the AD come up with this plot to get Jimbo without spending any extra UAB cash (which was a mandate from the President) after Watson Brown was fired. So, Boosters "pledged" to come up with half of the value of the contract. They only came up with a fraction - the rest were verbal and conditional promises. But once UAB signed the contract, they would be on the hook for the money. Wisely, without the cash, the Biard said "no."

4. Just like the promised money in the Jimbo story, that's what we've got in this case. UAB football should be allowed a peaceful death. Instead, we will languish for two years before people realize that the promised funds aren't coming.

5. Do a GIS for UAB football attendance. You'll get hundreds of photos like this:

division 1 schools number about what--120 that play football--wonder how many lose money. doubtful any of the 6 power conferences lose anything.

conference USA football would seemingly be a money maker as a whole--is UAB the only team hemorrhaging in that conference?

I think more lose money than you believe.

They continue to do it because they put a price on the exposure, what it does to admissions and the possibility that a run on winning seasons would turn their fortunes around.
