1 - Right To Work laws
2 - Literacy rates
3 - Consistent voting pattern since 1996?

Mississippi - #1 in poverty rate, 49th in college grads, 50th in literacy - Right To Work, voted GOP last 5 presidential elections

1 and 3 have nothing to do with it. 2, of course, does.

Right to work laws, which make it very difficult to unionize, have no effect on wage levels?

I know some labor economists who would disagree

I know some who wouldn't. The net effect (once an extra 1-1.5% bump in employment for RTW states and a much lower cost of living) is negligible. Some studies, when those things are factored, have the effective wage higher in RTW states.

And all states should be RTW. Forced unionization is wrong.

Is Georgia a giver or a taker state? Methinks we are a giver state, especially as compared to our impoverished brethren to the east and west. To our north, Tick informs us that the federales in Oak Ridge are carrying the whole state of Tennessee on their Atlas-like backs, so they're good to go. To our south, JD tells us those Jews are in charge of everything, especially during the cold months. So they're all mazeltov.

In short, all is well.

There are varied reasons why certain states get more funding per capita. One big reason is size. A lot of the top states are small population states. If you are a low population state, all you need is one Indian reservation or border security issues to skew it To think it's solely by economics, you are simple minded.

OK, it's not just blacks who they brutalize . . .

Apparently the deputies thought it was a Sheriff's helicopter overhead, not a news chopper. The suspect puts his hands behind his back, then takes 37 kicks/stomps/punches - including 17 to the head - along with a few blows from a baton after he was cuffed.

The suspect was lying on the ground face down with his hands behind his head, but it was in a very threatening manner. The officers feared for their lives.

Just when you thought a sitting prez couldn't get any dumber, well, he has...from USA Today.

President Obama blames global warming for his daughter's asthma. Today that's politically useful spin, but the science says something different. If you're looking for a culprit, it just might be Malia's dad.

In an interview Wednesday, in support of a new White House climate change awareness campaign, the president noted that his 16-year-old daughter had asthma when she was 4. He said that as a father, when your child says she has trouble breathing, "the fright you feel is terrible." Fortunately, doctors were able to treat Malia's condition quickly.

The president connected his daughter's malady to global climate change. In a discussion Tuesday, he said "all of our families are going to be vulnerable" to global warming-induced health risks because "you can't cordon yourself off from air or from climate."

The good news is that there is less reason for alarm than the White House suggests. The Environmental Protection Agency cautions that "outdoor air pollution and pollen may also worsen chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma." Yet the EPA also reports that our air quality has substantially improved; aggregate emissions of common pollutants have decreased 62% between 1980 and 2013. It is unlikely that cleaner air is causing the increase in asthma.

San Bernardino County is the largest in the US (by area) and most of it is a desolate wasteland of rocky foothills, hardscrabble farms/ranches, abandoned mines and high desert. It's mean territory (I pastored there years ago) and consequently, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is notoriously mean. They kick a ton of white ass (mostly because there are not a lot of blacks) and a lot of their encounters end "tragically."

Because they are between LA and San Diego, they avoid a lot of attention but there have been so many "tragedies" that they are now under federal scrutiny.

To be fair, the county has become the state's depository for sex offenders, meth labs, economic blight, etc., and the gang problem that once dominated L.A. has basically migrated to San Bernardino. Add in the bears/mountain lions invading the housing subdivisions (because of the drought), plus a nine month long wildfire season and it pretty much sucks to be a San Bernardino County Deputy Sheriff.

The job pays well, however. $40K while in the Academy, $60K while in the jails on guard duty (first 2 years), then basically minimum $100K (incl. OT) for a deputy with 3 years tenure.

Didn't San Bernardino declare bankruptcy recently?

Also, $40-$60-$100K sounds like a lot of money, and it is, especially here in flyover country. But I understand that $100K will qualify you for food stamps in LA or SF. People I know who moved to coastal CA tell me the rule of thumb is: take your current rent or mortgage, and double it. Then take the square footage of your current residence, and cut it in half. That's what you can expect when you move to San Diego, LA or San Fran.

Maybe San Bernardino is far enough inland to escape the astronomical cost of housing, and that $100K is still good money. That would also explain the bankruptcy.
