Interesting quote. He said he's not ready but also that he was going to speak with Meyer and figure things out. I think it's even money that he declares.

It may be 90% of the documentary anyway, so why not? While they're at it, may as well crank a Jeff Lebo or Jay Burson one out, too.

They could do one on Buzz Peterson and Michael Jordan. Buzz was the more highly regarded recruit coming out of high school and him and Jordan were roommates at Carolina. A 30 for 30 documenting their different career trajectories would be rubbing salt in the wound, but I like that...

Hmph, I checked...Buzz WAS more highly touted out of NC, overall (with Michael Jordan finishing runner up on almost all awards given out in '81). I never heard of the guy. His career isn't that interesting though. Michael Jordan was his best man, for whatever that's worth.

Jordan left a year early (the year before I got there), but he came back to summer school for a couple of summers after he left, used to see him hanging out on Franklin St. regularly. Buzz wisely chose not to leave early, so he was a senior when I was a freshman. I don't really remember seeing him around...

Actually Lynwood Robinson of Southern Wayne was the more highly regarded of the 3 recruits in Dean's class of '81 haul. By the time practice started, it was clear who was No. 1

And, IIRC, the third kid was a guy named Mike Jordan out of Wilmington Laney. It was never Michael until at least midway through his freshman year when he started telling the media to call him Michael, not Mike.

I think the 49ers and Raiders both made good hires.

Well, that Buzz dude was NC Player of the Year (MJ runner up) and NC Athlete of the Year (MJ runner up) when they came out of HS. Buzz is in the McD All American Hall of Fame, as well. We know MJ is there (and he held the single game scoring record until Jonathan Bender - iirc - broke it). How can this Lynwood kid be more highly regarded if he was from Cackalacki, too?

Can't believe you haven't heard about this, as much as has been written about Jordan. I can't link my memory as a middle school kid who subscribed to The Poop Sheet and followed recruiting as well as anyone could in the pre-Internet days but here's this story about Jordan's recruitment. I guess the UNC coaches didn't consider Jordan the 3rd guy, per this story, but I remember reading that Robinson was the guy that everyone was excited about.

Buzz, who was a big deal in western NC wasn't considered to be likely to have that type of success in college. Buzz was OK, a serviceable player but naturally never really came close to approaching his high school glory and he also had injury issues.

Robinson hurt his knee during the state playoffs as a senior in HS and never fully was the player he was. A tragic figure, he ended up transferring to Appalachian State his last 2 years and let them in scoring.

Jordan's situation would never happen today. Kids are going to camps by the time they're 13 or 14 and anyone with Jordan's athleticism would be duly noted. In 1979-80, he was able to fly well below the radar of the media and fans and Robinson was a star on a well-known high school team (that played in Laney's conference vs. Jordan).

It didn't help that he signed the same day as Lynwood Robinson, a point guard from Southern Wayne High School and the MVP of the previous year's 4-A state tournament. UNC's Fogler had described Robinson as "the next Phil Ford" and his commitment stole the headlines from Jordan—except in Durham, where sports writer Keith Drum, who had been at Honesdale and seen Jordan dominate the nation's best prospects, told anybody that would listen that Jordan was by far the more important signee.

Judging from his expression, I think Jordan jumped over him...

Southern Wayne, mother fuckers!

Cecil Exum and Lynwood (both went to Carolina, but Lynwood, "the next Phil Ford" went to App after he blew out his knees) were on the '80 state title team. Cecil's kid was a lottery pick last year. Cecil has a weird Australian accent after living there for 30 years.

Southern Wayne had that duo. Goldsboro had Andrew Teachey (wake) Laney had MJ and some 6'8" dude who went to a mid-major. They were all in the same conference. Dad has talked about seeing those games and how crazy it was back then.
I proudly took AFAM 040 at Carolina.

Coach Smith flew into fucking Mt Olive's little "airport" to see the Laney @ SW games. Laney never made it out of the sectionals.
