Crash,

Nurses didn't make the precaution calls with Duncan and with Ebola. Before we blame the nurses in Dallas: The PPE the staff were using was not sufficient. The training the staff was given was not sufficient. But nurses do make isolation decisions in hospitals. You know why? No one else will. Most medical centers have a very small (1 or 2) Infection Control department. And they work day shift. And most insurance won't reimburse a routine consult for most patients with precautions, or by the time they do, it's too late.

Further, at least on the surface, some of the virulence appears to be heightened with certain patients. Duncan's reported exposure was helping a woman out of his cab. And the doctors in Africa who tested positive for Ebola and were flown to the States had better gear than the nurses in Dallas and still became infected.

At the very least, there should have been an Infection Prevention Specialist on duty in Dallas to observe/supervise gowning/degowning before they went to the more appropriate Level C suits.

that response is a little scary

you hope somebody fucked up and led to this and by not effing up maybe we can contain it.

but the docs being protected but still getting it is worrisome. nurses using universal precautions at the least and still getting it. duncans act with a woman in a cab doesnt sound like she had soiled herself to the degree spread was possilble.

nowif these people arent coming in contact dierectly with GI secretions and still getting it--there might be quite a repeat performance in 15 days from the contacts these two girls made before they were quarentined

Crash,

I am curious to see how much of a shift the R0 takes with this outbreak. Ebola currently has an R0 of 1.5 to 2.0. Part of the reason the R0 has been so low is that it has a relatively short infectious period because of the very rapid 70% mortality rate. With good healthcare, the mortality rate will drop, and even the patients who succumb, live longer - which will ultimately drive the R0 up. Hopefully, it doesn't mutate further into something even more rapid and virulent, because, if it does, we will have a real problem.

yeah I was wondering if low grad fever of 99.5 means you are infectious (for the nurse) or is it only when you are actually spewing GI fluids.
1.0-2.0 is encouraging. read somewhere they have 10K vaccines experimental they have in stock. be tthere are 100 plus people in dallas presbyterian i n line to volunteer for that new vaccine

I only allow historic military games, EA Sports games and Modern Warfare games. No bullshit creature around. SI fi games make my blood boil. Still I would blast DS without looking.

A woman from Little Rock, Arkansas, is now recovering after a bizarre chain of events that led doctors to find the tongue of a deer lodged into her vag!na.

The Arkansas woman, who’s name has not been released, went to her gynecologist complaining that her discharge had a “very bad odor.” Her doctor performed a typical exam checking for several different issues that could have been causing this problem. All tests were negative.

The doctor was not at all concerned about her complaints, until the results of the pap smear came back.
Woman Hospitalized To Remove Deer Tongue

The report indicated that the cells taken from the pap smear, were not human. It could not determine the origin of the cells: all they knew was that they were not human cells.

The doctor requested that the woman come back for a repeat exam, and to discuss the findings.

During the exam, the doctor inserted his speculum, and scooped out a large piece of loose, decaying flesh. The doctor was disturbed with what he had found.

“During the exam, I was utterly shocked with what I had found. Never in my 33 years of practice have I seen anything like this,” Dr. Lee told the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology. “What I removed from the woman, looked like a long tongue, but certainly not a human tongue. Then, what she admitted to her husband after the exam, was even more disturbing.”

The woman finally confessed the dreaded details to her husband. After her husband’s recent hunting trip, he brought home a deer and gutted and dressed it in their garage. She admitted to seeing the tongue, admired its length, and had snuck off with it to use it as a pleasuring aid.

She didn’t remember leaving it up there.

Sheesh. What's bothering me is how incompetent her husband must be at eating pussy...and every other man she has dealt with (if there were others). Leaving a tongue in the vagina like a dildo? WTF?

Well, I'm not a native NYer. I'm a Philly dude. I have a mild accent, but it's largely confined to saying the word "jawn" a lot and pronouncing the word "wooder" for water.
