Everything I've seen of the "Grove" is that it's exactly like every other tailgate found anywhere in the country except there's more shade. And that makes it 'an incredible experience'

It's tiny, so everyone is crammed in one spot.
Sure, I could have stayed in the past. I could have even been king. But in my own way, I am king.

It's not the venue per se. It's the hospitality. Everyone wants to ply the rival fan with food and drink. That, and the spectacle of chandeliers, linen table cloths, champagne fountains, and real silverware and stemware at some of the tents is what gives it its rep.

Personally, I believe it's a bit overrated. But, that said, I've never had to buy something to eat or drink at a game in Oxford. Some Reb tailgate always sought me out and offered.

Nah. We had BYU at Bama in the late 90's. They drank, smoked and cussed.

Unlikely, AA. You have no evidence of that, and I have suffered through growing up in a Cougar/Rebel family. The only one ever cussing was my dad, but he was stone cold sober. I've probably been to 20 BYU games in my life, and the only cussing I ever heard was from my father, and I've never seen anyone smoke or drink. Thus, the Rebel sign was hilarious. My sister, who went to the Y, and my dad, Ole Miss class of 64, went to that game. I'm glad I missed it; watching either play make my eyes bleed.

Unlikely? I have no evidence?

I have all the evidence I need. I was there, I tailgated, and I had BYU fans at my tailgate. One BYU fan and I swapped (unlit, uncut) cigars and enjoyed some bourbon. So, my personal evidence is a posteriori. Now, you can call my integrity into question and assume that I am lying on the matter. All I can tell you is that I am not. I have been to Provo. They sell beer there - EVEN on Sundays, you know? And the majority of those in Provo, I would think, are BYU fans. At the very least, I noted BYU gear at the local bars. The Utah fans at the Sugar Bowl were drinkers, too. Apparently, you can be fans of either of those teams without devoutly following church doctrine, or even being Mormon at all, for that matter.

Thought about getting one of these my last time in Utah. I didn't. Regret that now.

If you want, I can post some more pics. Or I could give you a listing of all the bars in Provo.

Kinda reminds me of that Jim McMahon interview where he basically laughs at the BYU honor code and how some people got told on and some didn't - but if you were a good player, no one gave a shit. And that's actual students. Not just a random fan who buys a ticket.

I've had a great time in bars in SLC when skiing out there. Wassach (sp?) brewery was going strong back in the 80's, IIRC, so they were pretty far ahead of the curve on the microbrew craze...
