Jeter made a career of doing what he was supposed to do and that, in itself, is greatness.

Comparing Mickey to Jeter is comical.

Rat has done that as well, but I don't think anyone would call that greatness...

probably Jeter's greatest accomplishment is he doesn't have a rap sheet a mile long - parents are ok with their kid having a Jeter fathead on their wall

Clearly I don't watch Yankee games so I didn't know the significance of why Kornheiser was always imitating the announcer who introduced Jeter coming up to bat. I think that's pretty cool

Again, had he been a Rockie ESPN would be all over Paul Konerko calling it quits. 5 championships is not an individual award. Right place right time with a loaded lineup. 3000 hits I'll give you however. That's an accomplishment. Then again, he played for 20 years.

The most comparable player who didn't play for a name team and didn't win the championships in this era is Craig Biggio and while Jeter was probably a bit better overall, it shows what the spotlight and the championships will do for you. Jeter is apparently one of the greatest ever while Biggio cannot even get into the Hall on the first or second ballot despite the 3000 hits, etc.

I don't know about the spotlight, but the championships sure make a difference, even if that's shouldn't be counted as an individual achievement. What if Biggio's teams had won 5 WS's and Jeter's teams hadn't? I bet people would be making a bigger deal over Biggio if they had...

EFZ. Championships definitely impact the story...and whether you get commercials telling you goodbye.

I am no Jeter apologist, but I think it was calculated that over 20 years, Jeter had played in 4 or 5 games in which his team was mathematically eliminated. You need a team to win a championship, but he was a big part of all those teams.

The announcer thing is pretty cool because the guy died about 5 years ago. They still use his voice to call Jeter up, the same way he did for Jeters first 15 seasons. The regular announcer covers everyone else. I always got a kick out of that.

He wasn't Hall Of Fame worthy even before he juiced up.

ATM in denial about the Biggio juicing reminds me of the Rat denial of Griffey Jr. juicing.

Griffey = last pure hitter in baseball
