Ford went to Michigan. They're pretty smart folks up there.

I meant the University of Michigan. Like many Big Ten schools, they are like Vanderbilt academically, except with a halfway decent football program. Not SEC good football-wise, but halfway decent, sometimes.

Former UGA starter and 5 star recruit Trey Matthews announces he's transferring to Auburn. Him plus Nick Marshall are making UGA our farm club.

Matthews was one of the many, many UGA players who got into trouble for "violation of team rules." Richt is undoubtedly a "good Christian man, " but his players get into trouble more than Phil Fulmer's used to. I didn't think that was possible.

Bless his heart, Gus Malzahn takes some of these wayward youths and turns them into good citizens. If they also happen to become all-SEC and All-American football players, then so much the better.

So, armed robbery?

Incorrect. According to http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index. ... y_mat.html
Matthews, who was dismissed by Georgia coach Mark Richt after a classroom incident earlier this month

Matthews was arrested in March with three other teammates on misdemeanor charges of theft by deception for cashing scholarship checks twice.
It doesn't say what the classroom incident was, but it doesn't sound like armed robbery. Double cashing schollie checks is bad, but still only on the level of selling textbooks.

Matthews had 12 tackles against Auburn last year as a true freshman. He was even in on the immortal "Miracle at Jordan Hare" play.

I love it when an ostensibly staunch christian (but really, is there any other kind?) turns moral relativist...

Especially the 'redemption' part as in 'repurchase, as of something sold'

Alabama students never 'sold' text books. Some 'borrowed inappropriately' and may have rented them out to others for gain- and even then, I wouldn't say it was the same. The school gave the student the use of the books for the semester, there was no 'theft by deception' and it was never a criminal matter, just a process that the NCAA didn't like because it gave access to books for classes that the student wasn't registered for. For that we vacated 14 wins or some such.

Apparently he also got into an altercation in a classroom:
According to two classmates in Dr. Ronald Bogue’s Children’s Literature course, Matthews was repeatedly disruptive and was asked to leave the room after an outburst on Tuesday. Dr. Bogue, a member of UGA’s faculty since 1975 and the soon-to-be retired head of the Comparative Literature department, likely did not wish to speak about the incident after multiple attempts to reach him, according to Dr. Dainess Maganda, another professor within the department.

Yeah, that really put a big dent into the Mike Shula legacy. At least the NCAA did some merciful cherrypicking and let you keep your wins over Tennessee. The NCAA always finds a way to go easy on Bama.

All kidding aside, I said the textbook case at UA was chump change at the time, and still say so today. So put your claymore down, AA.

Matthews didn't get arrested for whatever happened in the classroom, so that was likely chump change too.

He'll have to sit out a year before he can play. Same for former 4 star Ole Miss starting offensive lineman Austin Golsen, who is also transferring to Auburn. They may turn out to be big contributors for us, or they may spend the year getting fat and high, end never pan out at all. Only time will tell.

I would have much preferred to lose two schollies (what Ball State lost with much more egregious violations) than to vacate wins. Two schollies is nothing. Taking wins off, erodes legacy. No cherrypicking. The violations were discovered before the Tennessee game and those players did not participate.

I, as you know, am generally for giving students a second chance. I only mention the classroom fight because its a warning sign; if I were an Auburn fan, it would trouble be considering the check theft charges hasn't scared him onto a straight and narrow path.

Sounds to me like a blatant case of insensitivity on the part of the instructor.

Saint Gus Malzahn knows what he is doing. He is an altruist, always seeking to better the lives of his fellow human beings. Offering young men a fresh start after their traumatic experiences at UGA (Marshall, Matthews), UF (Newton) and Ole Miss (Golsen) are all examples of his boundless philanthropy. The fact that they all happen to be monster athletes has nothing to do with it.

Code: Select all

Taking wins off, erodes legacy.
I assure you, the Shula legacy remains completely unchanged as the result of the non-Tennessee sanctions imposed on Alabama by the coddling NCAA.

"or they may spend the year getting fat and high"

That seems like the best option if you have to spend a year sitting around in Alabama...
