So if I cover up the other six countries with a better ranking than us.. with my hand....by golly we ARE #1.Toemeesleather wrote:http://www.statisticbrain.com/countries ... pollution/

I think I'll try that method next December when the final conference rankings come out ("looka here....Tennessee is #1 by God!").

It was five with cleaner air unless I'm missing something. And of those, two aren't even real countries. So, three: Canada, Ireland, and Australia. Canada is America's hat, so they don't count. Ireland should rightfully be averaged with the UK (dirty Limeys still worship the Queen), so now we've got them beat when you look at the aggregate. That leaves us and Australia. And, for that matter, they still have the queen on stamps and money...so add them and India to UK's total, and we are number one!

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread
I would guess the US ranking is based on the untold square miles of midwestern/western scrub land/mountains where less than 5% of the population actually lives or even spends any time at, and that's not even counting Alaska. I wonder what the ranking would be if you looked at just the top 20 urban centers (where I would guess far more than 50% of the population actually lives). Of course, you could say the same for any country, but, like Australia, the US has huge swaths of unpopulated (or mostly unpopulated) land area...

Most counties on this planet aren't even as big as Texas, much less Alaska...

Two of the three real countries above the US have that same feature. 80% of Canadians live with 75 miles of the US border (or something like that, and the rest is the Great Frozen North. Australia is three cities with a huge desert and some (virtually) uninhibited wetlands. Even Ireland is 1 real city and a bunch of villages.

Yes, that's why I noted Australia, and other countries like it, as having the same features as the US that would lend them to getting a good ranking, as opposed to anything they've actually done to ameliorate pollution...

Can Democrats Leverage the Latest Jobs Report? - WaPo
It has been a long time since the White House got the kind of good economic news that arrived on Friday morning with the latest jobs report. Democratic strategists have been arguing for some time that the key to the November elections is to make the economy the focus of their political message. Through polling and focus groups, they've come away believing that the contrast between the two parties is best drawn on economic issues and on policies that affect the middle class.
The latest Washington Post-ABC News poll underscored why Democrats see these economic contrasts as a central plank in their November strategy. By 52 to 32 percent, Americans trust Democrats over Republicans on helping the middle class. By 49 to 33 percent, they say Democrats are closer to their position on whether the minimum wage should be raised.
