If you're drinking an old fashioned, it doesn't really matter. The bitters and citrus and fucking cherries will cover up any of the nuances. So, yeah, Evan Williams, or Early Times or whatever will work.

Listen to him, hedge. Cocktails don't lend themselves to plastic hip flasks.

can't get that fucking cherry...to squeeze...into the little opening

No script A. Flask is the wrong color. Blanton's is a quality choice, though.

Also, no hat, Members Only jacket or Caddy. I did just buy a new F-150, that'll have to do.

I've got one of those flasks. Never used it, though...

As tick said, those flasks don't lend themselves to fruity cocktails.

I've never thought of an Old Fashioned as a fruity cocktail. What about a mint julep?

The few old fashioneds I've drank have had citrus, bitters, and a cherry in them.

What about a julep?

Do you consider that a fruity cocktail? I realize it doesn't have fruit in it, but mint and sugar seems as if it would qualify...

Ahh, I see what you're saying.....I am not using the word 'fruity' as an insult; just descriptive. As in, 'a drink that uses fruit as an essential ingredient in the recipe'. I like zombies, for example, and those are fruity drinks.

A julep would be a sweet drink, no doubt. I wouldn't call it fruity, though.

I'm afraid I did detect just a hint of sass in your original post...

My brown liqour cocktail of choice is the Manhattan. Rye whiskey (bourbon works too), sweet vermouth, and bitters. Stirred, not shaken. Hold the cherry.

A classic.

If anyone here can smell out fruity it would be Hedge. His nickname in prison was Sensodine.

I personally think that a quality brown liquor (bourbon, scotch, cognac, brandy) have enough character and taste to stand on their own easily. I always drink vodka and cheaper white rums mixed, though. Good tequilas and dark or spiced rums I like chilled, but otherwise neat (maybe a lime peel). The only two whiskey cocktails I will occasionally order are (as hedge mentioned earlier) a julep, and when in NOLA, a sazerac. Or if it's cheapo stuff (Evan Williams, Ancient Age, whatever) at an open bar, I'll mix it with cola or whatever is handy to disguise the kerosene flavor.

But to each their own. Far be it from me to tell someone that they don't like what they like, or are wrong for liking it a certain way - just return the courtesy.
