Bundy is the wrong and he's pretty much a blowhard playing a bit loose with the facts.

that said, there is no way the Bereau of Land Management needs a damn in house swat team to keep desert turtles safe from cattle.

Those militia people aren't anti-grazing or pro free range cattle -they are there because an off shoot of the department of interior decided it was going to end a man's way of life bowing to political pressure from Harry Reid - matter of fact it ended several rancher's way of life in the area and Bundy was a the last hold out. When Bundy said "f-you guys, I'm not going to go quietly into the night" the BLM showed up and went from determined to end his way of life to just plain ending his life.

And this has opened up a can of worms because there is all this pent up frustration with the government over these strong arm tactics and given that the 21st anniversary of Waco was last week, that whole affair is still pretty fresh on the minds of these people.

Harry Reid calling them domestic terrorists wasn't a slip of the tongue - remember , anyone labeled a domestic terrorist, thanks to the good senator John McCain and his ilk, now doesn't have a right to due process in the eyes of the federal government.

These are Americans and a whole bunch of them are fed up with this mentality that the federal government gets to do what it wants and then you can decide if their actions were right or warranted.

There is a whole subset of nuances here regarding Nevada law - especially as it relates to unfenced land. The west has a completely different set of rules for this sort of stuff, and admittedly I'm only know enough to be dangerous about it, but I can say with conviction that this isn't as simple as the man refusing to pay grazing fees for the last 20 years.

Harry Reid is idiotic for calling the militia idiots domestic terrorists. THey are not terrorists, just idiots. The domestic terrorists are the people like the guy who shot up the Jewish Center a few weeks ago, the guy who killed all those Sikhs in Minnesota a couple years ago and the myriad abortion clinic bombers and physician killers out there.

The government is overreaching because they know Bundy can never sell his cattle. The penalties he incurred for having his cattle graze on federal property will come out of the transaction. They just have to wait him out. Their arrogance and aggression is making this more of a story than necessary.

If this was a story about a person here illegally, was about to be deported, appealed his case in the courts, lost all his arguments in that process and a militia of Mexican and other sympathizers surrounded his house when it came time to deport him, I bet you the Fox News coverage and punditry would not be the same as it is for this fuckery.

The definition of Patriot is a banner of convenience. Fuck Bundy.

What he's claimed is that it was his land because it was in his family for generations. This is a false statement on his part. The fact is, the amount they charge for grazing fees on public land is $1.35 per cow/calf while on private land it's $16.80. But Bundy doesn't believe he should pay even this.

This was not an overreach on the part of the govt. This was a man who basically doesn't want to pay his already govt subsidized payments because he "doesn't recognize the federal govt" even as he waves and American flag. This is a person refusing to pay for what he uses (at a discount, no less) with friends with guns pointing at govt officials doing their job.

I"m trying not to be a Bundy defender on the grazing fees thing but the BLM determined that in order to save the desert tortoise they were going to only allow him to graze 150 cattle from the 900 or so he had to be a profitable ranch. I know boo fucking hoo , the government is always right - but while other cattle ranchers folded up shop, he said no I"m not going to do this, this is my life.

There is no shortage of American stories of people fighting imminent domain, gentrification, zoning laws, etc (and in all those cases it was just the government officials doing their job) -sometimes they win, sometimes they lose - so I have no problem with Bundy fighting to save his family farm and his families heritage going back at least 60 years and likely pre-dating the existence of the BLM.

and screw that noise about government officials just doing their job. You don't need a swat team with snipers to round up cattle off federal land.

That's exactly why those militia people are there - because government agencies have decided now they view the people they are supposed to represent as a threat to their ability to do their job and have armed themselves like a para military organization to confront them. The BATF was just doing their job at Waco.

fuck those governments bastards - if they feel they have to confront the public with automatic rifles, tasers and attack dogs, then I fully enjoy the idea of a them sweating a bit when they realize the locals are on highway overpasses with scoped guns and has their head in the crosshairs. They suddenly realize their own mortality and its just a job. Maybe rounding up cattle isn't worth getting your head blown off afterall - a lesson they should have known prior to showing up with their kevlar vests and M-16s prepared to shoot a cranky old man and his family.

if the BLM had allowed him to continue use of the land as he had prior to 1993 or whenever, then it would be a case of some guy just trying to put one over and freeload.

But the BLM made a decision to phase out ranching on the federally owned land - and Nevada is 81% federal land.

If it really was that simple, there wouldn't be a movement among western states right now to take back federal land which owns on average about 50% of the land in the western states excluding California and Washington.

but my outrage has very little to do with whether Bundy has a principled stand or not, its our federal governments response to him that is completely out of bounds. I only point out that Bundy had some justification to believe his stand has merit and that he didn't just decide to stop paying the government because he figured it was a great way to save money.
