The thing is, MM and WH have set the bar so high that I think actors are going to want to jump at the chance of topping it.

I'd like to see Chris Pine in it next season.

wasnt liking the fact that they went with MM & WH for true detective and I admittedly thought the early adoration was due to the star power. But they are actin the shyt out of this season, what a great show.

The cat's out the bag, a cable TV series can flesh out characters and story lines at a level that can't be achieved during a 120-150 minute big screen blockbuster

That said, I like the fact that Sopranos, Breaking Bad & The Wire launched careers like Idris Elba & Aaron Paul from nothing, and vaulted middling actors like Gandolfini & Cranston into icons

That's why I wouldnt mind if they stood on the strength of their writing and went with new or lesser known up & comers next season.... even though it's a pipe dream

some counterpoints :

I was talking about "True Detective" with Andy Greenwald, a critic I greatly respect, who is not nearly as keen on the show as I am. Among other things, he took issue with the drama's limited and predictable female roles -- and that is a valid point (you will not be surprised that Hart's wife is defined by her relationship with her husband and frequently comes off as a nag). Women in "True Detective" are scolds, sex partners or dead bodies, and while that's a TV trend that often frustrates me, the focus of this show is Cohle and Hart's difficult relationship and the exploration of Cohle's dark places. Those aspects of the HBO drama were usually very effective, even if I wish some aspects of "True Detective" didn't roam dangerously close to tough-guy cliches.
