C. Ray Nagin, a former corporate executive who became mayor in 2002 pledging to modernize city government and instead became an emblem of government dysfunction in the months and years after Hurricane Katrina, was found guilty in federal court on Wednesday on 20 counts of bribery and fraud.

The verdict marks a dubious milestone in a city long associated with an ethically loose style of politics: It makes Mr. Nagin the first New Orleans mayor to be charged, tried and convicted of corruption.

He was found guilty of all but one of 21 counts, including bribery, wire fraud and filing false tax returns. Sentencing has been set for June 11, Mr. Nagin’s 58th birthday. Mr. Nagin could face 20 years in prison by federal sentencing guidelines, said Tania Tetlow, a Tulane University law professor and a former federal prosecutor.

If the GOP runs a racist/misogynist/Bircher - which is basically most of the guys they're talking about now, Asians and Latinos will become a permanent 85%+ for Dems, as well.

Hispanics (especially the recently arrived ones) could have become an R constituency rather than a Dem one. They tend to be very devout Catholics, whereas the Dem's are openly hostile to Catholicism (as well as all religion except Islam). Hispanics tend to prize the traditional family, whereas the Dem's do not. Hispanics tend to work their butts off to create their own private sector wealth and dream of starting their own businesses. The Dem's are much more passionate about redistributing wealth rather than creating it.

*Democrats are overwhelmingly the people who provide labor and Republicans are controlled by forces that exploit labor. Expecting Hispanics to vote for the GOP is like expecting the Hebrew slaves to vote for Pharaoh.

*Democrats are the party that looks out for family issues (healthcare for children, living wages, quality public schooling, etc.) while the GOP's answer to everything is privatization and if you cannot afford to send your kids to a $30K/year private elementary school, then they deserve to be grape pickers and housekeepers.

Nagin's Sudden Switch
In 2002, days before the New Orleans mayoral election, Nagin switched to the Democratic party. Prior to this, Nagin was a registered Republican. While a business executive, he gave donations to both parties. Although he claimed to be a Democrat, Nagin was not much of one. For instance, he campaigned for a Republican candidate for Governor, Bobby Jindal.

During Katrina, Nagin became an apologist for the Bush Administration and attempted to shift the blame on the Democratic Louisiana Kathleen Blanco.
In 2008, Nagin’s close connections with Karl Rove were exposed in the book “Machiavelli’s Shadow: The Rise and Fall of Karl Rove,” by Paul Alexander.
The article implies that Nagin's Democrats were as shallow as his his ambition was high. He chose to be Democrat not out of any profound principles but to win elections.

The problem, in a nutshell, is that a Republican, calling himself a Republican, would not get elected in New Orleans. Between 2002 -2004 less than 15 percent of voters in the city of New Orleans claimed to support the GOP.

In Nagin's case, it's totally accurate to call him a Democrat—he won twice on the ticket. Republicans have not won the mayor's office in New Orleans since Northern troops were occupying the South so, without reading minds, I assume a lot of photo/wire editors think readers will guess that the black mayor of New Orleans was a Democrat. They shouldn't assume. Good point! Refs, worked.

But Nagin had such a strange and checkered political career. In 2001 he was a Republican businessman. In 2002 he was a Democrat running for the only political office he ever held. In 2003, after he asked GOP gubernatorial candidate Bobby Jindal what he could do for New Orleans and got a detailed response, he was that rarest of birds: a black Democratic mayor endorsing a Republican. (Jindal lost that race, narrowly.)

If you don't think the federal government is openly hostile to the Catholic Church, then why is the Catholic Church is now fighting them in court trying to defend themselves against anti-Catholic policies?

How would your church like it if a Republican president tried to force all Baptist churches to provide twerking lessons and whiskey for free to everyone at coffee hour? Would you be okay with a Republican government that forced Jewish hospitals or Muslim madrassas to serve pork in their cafeterias? Would you be okay with the Republican government forcing the Amish to use computers? With a Republican government forcing Mennonite women to wear miniskirts? With a Republican government forcing member of Quaker churches to take shooting lessons?

The fact that there are Catholic democrat politicians who go along with the war on Catholicism doesn't change what the government is trying to do to the Catholic Church right now.

Bullshit. My wife's family has lived in New Orleans for 80 plus years (longer than that in history). There was no question that Nagin was a Republican. It was well-known. He won because he said he was going to bring business principles to the mayorship.

As for Katrina, you are like a politician. You don't let facts get in the way of your ideology. Most of the people here know how much criticism that not only Nagin got but also Bush and Gov. Blanco. In fact, Blanco got more criticism than anybody. Of course, Landrieu didn't get criticism. SHE was the Senator. The power that could help people was all under the control of the other 3. Nagin was roundly criticized and the local newspaper twice supported one his opponents in the next mayoral election and in the runoff.

I lived near Chicago for 16 years, so I am adnittedly a little bit jaded when I ask: A mayor of New Orleans has found to be crooked? I would be shocked - SHOCKED! - if a politician even remotely connected to New Orleans, or Chicago, or Illinois, or Louisiana was NOT on the take. That stuff has been going on since Capone and the Long's. It's in the local DNA.

*Baptist Hospital Systems - which runs 14 hospitals in TN, MS and AR - are under the same constraints as the Catholics, as are dozens of Methodist, Adventist and other institutions affiliated with religions. Are Catholics under some greater scrutiny/oppression?
