I like the stinky pinky but only up to the first knuckle, I do not want a GD thumb up there--I've told her multiple times and I always catch her when she tries to pull a fast one---it's my butthole for Chrissakes I'm gonna know--so cut out the BS.

I'm sure this is a yearly rant for me but I just finished doing my taxes. On the one hand I want to pay my obligation, but on the other hand it just pisses me off that with tax software I can see what our tax burden would be individually versus married.

For example, if my wife filed single she'd get a 4500 refund back (and that's not even considering the 2 children deductible that we waved bye bye too several years ago) and if I filed single my tax burden is about $800.

Not that I'm not up to speed on taxes but I would suspect I just can't file single if we were living together with kids, I guess it would require that I file head of household ? I don't know, but what I do know is if we were divorced and living together our tax burden would be several thousand less than what it is combined. As of now I have to pay a little over $1600. So that's a swing of $5200

That sucks.

Something doesn't sound right about that.

The only thing I can figure is that I woud have to file head of household which has a substantially higher tax hit.

it just the tax software

I'll look at it again, but I think a big part of it is she doesn't clear 25K a year

If she claimed head of household with dependents at that salary level she would get a huge refund with EIC and child tax credits. That may outweigh the disadvantage of you filing single vs. married filing joint.

don't see any way we could file head of household based on the rules.

Most of the time, being married is a huge advantage tax-wise. eCat may be in that small niche where it isn't. Being married, I'm of course supportive of the marriage benefit. My BIL, now divorced complains about how much more in taxes he pays than if he was married to a working woman.

I caught where I messed up - I was applying her rate as married, not single....so I'm looking at what she would have got back filing married but individually which isn't possible.

I use professionals nowadays and said bye bye to Turbo Tax. Pros do better with all of this shit...and my undergrad degree is in accounting and I still have no desire to fuck with it.

You can't while married. I was saying she could use head of household if you both were single. For comparison purposes.

"For example, if my wife filed single she'd get a 4500 refund back (and that's not even considering the 2 children deductible that we waved bye bye too several years ago) and if I filed single my tax burden is about $800."

actually that has been what my son and commonlawdaughter in law have been doing

she qualified for earned income credit becuase they werent married and head of household--she then gave part of that to my son --even though they have lived together for 6 years it was better for them not getting married --and her claiming my grandson.

I think she makes too much now to get EIC but it helped for a few years.

now he has no excuse not to marry her

which she reminds him every day
