Do you not realize that hundreds of US oil companies went bankrupt over the past few years b/c oil prices were so low? the goal would be to reduce volatility in the market so that American oil, especially the smaller oil producers that got driven from the market would be able to exist

its not just pipeline, its also red tape. Oil producers are sitting on thousands of oil leases but the government won't grant permits to them, and with the idea that the political climate can change as fast as Biden shits his pants, they are reluctant to make any investment.

So when Biden says as part of his campaign speech no drilling on federal land, no drilling off shore, no drilling period - he means it and has the capability of preventing it.

Then there is also the issue of limiting the expansion of oil refineries. Oil drilling is capable of meeting capacity but production of gasoline is limited.

So when a moron says the president can't control gas prices, well, he's just a moron. A president can create a policy that lends itself toward a volatile market where a disruption on the other side of the world can tank our economy.

Shell had profits of $20b this year, but its essentially break even from the last year of covid. When its a requirement of 160b to make that 20b you have to have certainty from the government you'll be backed to make that investment.

also, considering how many Americans have died fighting wars where oil played some role, I don't think its off the table to consider oil vital to our national security and prioritize American production to support the American market first. If and only if American oil needs are met, can oil production be exported. If that means subsidizing during particularly bad times , while I'm not thrilled with that idea, it would be a cost just like military expenditures
