Lessee. 6 dead in the Tylenol scare gets fed guidelines for tamper-proof packaging.

Sandy Hook, Columbine, Orlando et al - can't even drum up a conversation about reinstating the AWB. 40 round magazines..no prob. Can't even stop people on the fed no-fly list from buying guns, guns, and more guns.

Guns and tylenol are probably a weak comparison, though. Stupid, even.

I think we have enough gun laws. And a bag ful of "normal" clips are all that is needed to cause havoc with any unarmed group.

Columbine used shotguns and 10-round clips, iirc.

We may have enough gun laws but they aren't the right ones. Hopefully one day our guns laws will look like Australia.

I think what we have now, if enforced, are sufficient.

I am going to see if there is a way to send money to the family they highlighted in Cary on 60 Minutes last night.
I proudly took AFAM 040 at Carolina.

If by family you mean Mom and that nice set of twins under her sweater...please share the address.

The problem with no-fly is no due process, no way to get why you are on it, and no set rules of what will put you on it.

You usually don't find out you're on it until you're stopped at the gate and have no real recourse when on there. As I'm sure you know, there have been many mistakes made with the list.

If the no-fly list were changed to address the above I would be okay with it.

The argument that assault-style weapons with high-capacity mags/clips helps keep a potentially tyrannical government in check - well, the folks who hold that premise dear are probably breathing a lot easier right now. Hopefully they'll stay vigilant, lest some authoritative madman ever gets the reins of power.

the thing about guns is - because they are ubiquitous , any community in the United States could be a victim of a mass shooting - but because they are also woven into the fabric of this country, those that are unaffected by gun violence on a day to day basis (in regards to mass shootings) see gun violence of that type as random and no more a threat than a mass pileup on the interstate or a hotel fire.

Secondly, many now see having a gun in their possession as the solution to random gun violence as the 3 minute response time to police arriving to scene may be the difference in 1 or 12 twelve people shot.

And, for the record, I hate the "assault" designation. Many times, nowadays, what makes a weapon an "assault weapon" is cosmetic. A high capacity clip just isn't necessary to cause mayhem. I believe the VaTech killer used a 22 and a 9mm pistol and no high capacity clips.

I prefer to call them "Death Sticks"

but more to your point

I think you've hit at the heart of why gun control advocates don't get traction.

If you're a gun control advocate intent on minimizing gun violence then the stereotypical assault rifle would be a lower priority. Clearly handguns - pistols and revolvers, made in mass since before the 1930's are responsible for the large majority of gun deaths.

There is nothing convenient about an assault rifle - you can't hide them and they are hard to carry. Meanwhile, my 7 shot Ruger LCP fits in the palm of my hand and costs $199.

So any moderate of fence sitter on gun control realizes this and doesn't get too excited at the idea of the window dressing gun control measures - which in turn makes it easier for the passionate gun control owners to make sure their second amendment rights are not infringed.

The emotional response to gun control after a mass shooting is well intentioned but always misdirected.

It is amazing how many famous / rich people come out for gun controls.

Meanwhile, their security detail that is with them for filming, going to eat, and pick up their kids, you know... carry guns.

Yeah those kids that attend the private schools, yeah willing to bet there is some armed protection there as well.

Mental health issues need to be addressed just like cancer and teen pregnancy in this country. More focus and help.
Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

News Reports
(1) Priebus made two public statements today. One is that the ban on Muslims will no longer be applied to green card holders. Notably absent from his statement was anything about people with other types of visa (including long-term ones), or anything about the DHS’ power to unilaterally revoke green cards in bulk.

The other was that the omission of Jews from the statement for Holocaust Remembrance Day was deliberate and is not regretted.

A point of note here is that Priebus is the one making these statements, which is not normally the Chief of Staff’s job. I’ll come back to that below.

(2) Rudy Giuliani told Fox News that the intent of yesterday’s order was very much a ban on Muslims, described in those words, and he was among the people Trump asked how they could find a way to do this legally.

(3) CNN has a detailed story (heavily sourced) about the process by which this ban was created and announced. Notable in this is that the DHS’ lawyers objected to the order, specifically its exclusion of green card holders, as illegal, and also pressed for there to be a grace period so that people currently out of the country wouldn’t be stranded — and they were personally overruled by Bannon and Stephen Miller. Also notable is that career DHS staff, up to and including the head of Customs & Border Patrol, were kept entirely out of the loop until the order was signed.

(4) The Guardian is reporting (heavily sourced) that the “mass resignations” of nearly all senior staff at the State Department on Thursday were not, in fact, resignations, but a purge ordered by the White House. As the diagram below (by Emily Roslin v Praze) shows, this leaves almost nobody in the entire senior staff of the State Department at this point.
