Dad was 46 when I was born. I wasn't planned. He wasn't happy

Re: MIT Engineers
Are you saying they were crazy and could be grounded. All they had to do was ask; and as soon as they did, they would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. They would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if they didn't, but if they were sane, they had to fly them? If they flew them, they were crazy and didn't have to; but if they didn't want to, they were sane and had to?eCat wrote:early in the war, to be on any bomber you had to be a special breed of man.
Sure, I could have stayed in the past. I could have even been king. But in my own way, I am king.

Re: MIT Engineers
My grandfather died in 1958. They said the war bothered him and that he refused to talk about it, even with a guy he knew from the army who lived nearby. My great uncle speculated that my grandfather not only dealt with the hell of combat but that my grandfather may have saw a concentration camp based on a few things my grandfather did say.
My grandfather and my Uncle Willie (one of his younger brothers, the oldest of the "second set") went through basic training together. They ended up in different units because my grandfather fucked him his foot and ankle towards the end of training. They didn't see each other again until the middle of the fucking Battle of the Bulge.
Uncle Willie sat me down when I was 18 or so and told me that I needed to learn that war was hell and wasn't the glorious bullshit people make it out to be. He didn't talk about specifics for the most part, but he did say it stayed with him and that he thought about it every day. I finally asked what it was like to shoot at someone. He explained that it's one thing to shoot at someone from a distance, but from the few times he was involved in close quarters combat, he could still remember seeing the whites of a German's eyes and seeing the fear. Uncle Willie said you didn't really think about it all then because it was kill or be killed, but afterwards it would sink in on him. Like the end of the Band of Brothers when Shifty talks about realizing that the German soldiers were probably young farm boys like him who would have had a lot in common with him, Uncle Willie said the same types of things. He also said that when people complained about the cold, he would laugh and think that it was nothing compared to the cold during Battle of the Bulge and worrying about German 88 rounds exploding around you.

Re: MIT Engineers
used to pitch horseshoes with my grandpa in the 70's and always noticed these scars on his back which he wouldn't say much about.
before he passed I got a hair up my ass and researched his 80th ID days and actually got ahold of the battalion reports during the bulge. He was hit January 1945 actually crossing into Germany from Belgium laid on the battle field for 3 days reported MIA by his battalion. they found him with his face and back injuries bad enough they just gave him morphine and figured he die. couple days later at the aid station he was still alive they sent him back to England and eventually to springfield Missouri where he had the first bone graft from his pelvis to replace his jaw. spent 14 mos recuperating in springfield before he returned back to indy
it was weird reading those daily reports showing the actions and casualties every day from each company
one other note--drafted in 43--by the time he got to the bulge he was already a staff sgt--5 promotions in 14 months
anyway looking forward to ken burns Vietnam series--be cool if he did one on ww2

Re: MIT Engineers
so I subscribed to this IPTV subscription service call SET TV. $20 a month for 500 channels including PPV , HBO , Showtime, Cinemax, Starz and Porn.
You get a free 3 day trial with no credit card required. Works well if you have an Android TV box running android 5.1 or higher, Amazon Fire Stick and they said it works with Roku too.
You can run it on 3 devices for for the $20 a month.
I've only been using it a bit, its not perfect, some channels drop but they are consistent - you get an app with a Menu guide so no cumbersome trying to figure it out.
There is another one I've heard about called Players Klub for $5 a month. Seems to be on par with the others.
I have no idea what will happen if they get busted and have my credit card on file as a subscriber but their website is high dollar so they aren't planning on packing up shop in the middle of the night.

My dad was in the army occupying Germany after the war. The only thing he ever told me was that Germans kept their country tidy, even the woods, and that must have been why our neighbor girls, whose mother was German, would pick up pine cones in their yard
