Re: MIT Engineers
you can get a hi-def Roku for $49.
There is a channel called USTV where you can get all the terrestial channels for free if you say you live in a foreign country.
I"m not familiar with the D-link box but I doubt it offers anything more than the Roku.
I'm still trying to get the hang of Justin TV but apparently there is alot of bootleg stuff on there.

Re: MIT Engineers
we got a roku about 3-4 years ago and it was $100 and I think it only had Netflix and maybe Hulu. But we were able to add HBO Go to the same Roku in the past 18 mos. so apparently you can add features without having to buy a new Roku.
We got the D-Link last year b/c my wife wanted Pandora. Getting YouTube was an added bonus on the D-Link, which I didn't think we really needed since we already had Netflix on the Wii and streaming Netflix pretty much six anyway.
I need to get rid of TWC and just get HBO via Roku since that's about all I watch anyway.

here's one for the group. I've got a 46" RCA HDTV and I can't get it to work with either my MacBook Pro or my wife's Google Nexus 7. I bought the HDMI adapters for each but neither the Mac nor the tablet will recognize the TV when it's plugged in. I did buy the HDMI cable for $6 from Ross so that might be the problem as I've gone through everything I know to do with the Mac. I'm not familiar at all with Android tech so I could easily be missing something there.

I have 149 channels on the "my channel" selection on my Roku. There are at least 300 to choose from. Most of them are so niche they appeal to only a handful of people but there is a shitload of stuff out there, plus the channels Roku doesn't certify that you can google and add to your Roku. Honestly I probably only watch like 5 of the channels regularly.
I don't think you can get HBO without a cable subscription. However, if you can get someone who subscribes to DISH to give you their password (or U-Verse, or a host of others) you could use their login and get HBO.
Another streaming option that is starting to get attractive is the Xbox360, especially if you network your computer to it.

HDMI adapters...you mean like a DVI to HDMI? I'd bet the problem is with your adapters.

Re: MIT Engineers
make sure you go DVI to HDMI
if you are trying to go VGA to HDMI you'll be shit out of luck, VGA might work if you drop the screen resolution to 1024 x 768, which is usually the max capacity VGA cables can handle

I don't think VGA will work at all because IIRC , its not digital. You need a converter with some built in intelligence to take the vga signal and convert it to a HDMI standard. Just a cable or adapter won't do it.

now you do.....
In order to view USTVNOW using the the Roku player directly on your TV follow the steps below. We recommend you stay connected to the internet with your computer and the Roku (connected to your TV) during this one time setup process.
On the Roku: Connect your Roku box to your TV and setup a wired or wireless Internet connection according to the accompanying instruction manual
On your computer: USTVNOW has to be added as private channel on your Roku player since it is not listed in the Roku Channel Store. In order to do this go to your Roku account page available here https://owner.roku.com/add/ustvnow, enter "ustvnow" as the linking code and click on "add channel"
On the Roku: Refresh your channels by entering the Roku channel store, and then going back to the top level menu. You should now be able to see the the USTVNOW logo among your "Channels"
On the Roku: Select the USTVNOW channel and press "OK" on your remote control and the select "continue" to proceed past the introduction to the registration screen
On your computer go to http://www.ustvnow.com/roku and enter the "CODE" you see on the registration screen together with your USTVNOW account log in and password and click on "link"
On the Roku: Select continue and press "OK" on the Roku, your USTVNOW service has now been linked to your Roku player

my SHARP Aquos has a PC slot for VGA, but only transmits at 724 x 1068, if I set the screen to any higher the signal is lost
so I switched video cards & went DVI to DVI (with an HDMI adaptor) & it worked like a charm at the highest resolution my Aquos could output (720p - 1080i)

Re: MIT Engineers
I don't know anything about the Nexus, but thunderbolt/minidisplayport on a mb pro should do fine to hdmi. Maybe a tv issue?
Sure, I could have stayed in the past. I could have even been king. But in my own way, I am king.

Re: MIT Engineers
I also upgraded my internet connection and my ISP sent me a combo modem/wireless router which basically eliminates the need for a wireless router
it's a piece of shyt, It would take forever for me to access the router settings, it didnt allow me to assign fixed DHCP addresses to my in home devices & when I went online I found that people in 2 story homes complained that the wi-fi range was extremely weak
the extra shitty part is that when they give you the new modem/router they take back the old one & you cant connect your old wireless router to it
did some more searching and found out that if I call my ISP and ask them to "bridge" the device it functionally becomes a modem again with no wireless or routing capabilities, then I was able to connect my old router & everything was gravy

OK, I got the Roku. How do I get porn? Also, please tell me there's a way to search for stuff besides having to tap one letter at a time with this remote control device...
