they told me it was to control her periods
Not a surprise. Fairly common as a matter of fact. It was the second most common reason for putting teens on the pill. Thing is, I knew that as soon as I put them on the pill, they were likely to begin intercourse.
My Dad is my hero still.

I really don't think you can do much with them after 7 or 8 years old. You can punish them, but they ain't gonna change. They are pretty much who they are going to be by the time they're 10. Puberty may throw a curve ball into their essential persona, but even that won't change them completely in most cases. And taking away their phone for a couple of weeks damn sure doesn't do anything, the MIF has already done that multiple times with the young 'un, and we're still dealing with scenes like two weekends ago. On the bright side, she really is a sweet, good-hearted kid, she's just got a wild hair...

Well, if her body is anything like you're alluding her mother's is...then I could see how all the problems can come real quick.

I already told my wife to love the little girl as much as possible now, because this little hazel-eyed girl will hate my wife for a few years once she's a teen. My wife largely is a manipulating control freak, too (if you let her be). So, this is going to get interesting a decade or so from now. I'm preparing to be the one to not take my daughter's side but give her an outlet for venting. Also, I'm trying like hell to get my wife prepared now...but I can see this is not going to go well, at least for a good 3 - 5 years of my daughter's life.

That frosty area of space between "Are you going to back me up on this?" and "The idiotic woman you married is totally unfair" is no man's land for you.

Yeah...but sooner or later I'll have to reappear. I'm thinking it's only but so long I can avoid the inevitable. Otherwise, it'll be "you just disappear and leave me by myself to deal with her!"

Damned if you do, damned...

I have seen the MIF. I can verify that she comes from good stock. Send her my way, Hedge.

we actually had a good night. We watchedThe Walking Dead together, and then collectively made fun of the fat girl who is friends with my daughter. My daughter asked if the fat girl could come over to the house and I said "yea, just don't let her in the kitchen" and my son got up and fist bumped me so we riffed on the fat girl for awhile much to the consternation of my daughter.

ahhh...fat girls...giving guys common ground to talk about for centuries.

speaking of The Walking Dead, dayummm..Rick is maniac now.

Yeah Rick is a stone cold don't fuck with me kinda guy right now. His character in the show is starting to mimic the comic book version of him in the sense of the "I will protect these people no matter what" kinda thing.

And Ecat with the boy's punishment, has a few laps lost the punch that it once had? If so, add in some squat thrusts or push up mountain climbers to the mix.
Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

Just an aside to you who are putting your girls on the pill---don't forget to warn them the pill doesn't prevent STD's --these days it can be a death sentence not just something a shot of antibiotics can cure. Sent from the Auld Country--just returned from a trip around Scotland. Loved Glamis Castle and of course had to go to Rosslyn Chapel--could have spent hours there. A small place but the carvings were unreal. Heard there was bad weather on the East Coast, hope you are all OK.

so I installed Windows 8 on my sandbox computer.

I'm not sure what all the hoopla is about. As far as I can tell its just a layer on top of Windows 7 to make it look like a tablet.

Since I'm using a mouse and a keyboard, all it really is is a collection of streaming widgets . Also you no longer have a local log in (well I guess you could but to take advantage of the interface)- it logs you in via your Windows Live or Hotmail account. I guess the idea of a windows app store is appealing to apple and droid users.

Its not worse or better, just different. Now if I had a touch screen or if all my data was on the cloud it might make it more interesting.

man, my 5-yr-old causes me the biggest trouble when he's just doing stuff that irritates me (taking forever to get in the bath, trying to ride the bannister, hanging onto the car mirror, etc) as opposed to doing things that are detrimental to him. If my attitude doesn't change by the time he's a teenager, I'll just ignore all the other stuff he's doing so long as he's not being annoying around me and he'll be a wildling.

I read that entire thread. It was actually educational in terms of understanding bandwidth versus data in the eyes of the service provider.

We are on AT&T and I want to get my kids smartphones but I have to put them on a separate plan in order to keep us grandfathered on the unlimited plan.

To my knowledge we've never been throttled but we don't typically stream anything on our phones except the occasional youtube video

hhhmmmmm

verizon is as shady as any other carrier, but in my honest opinion, the original poster had it good and should have known it could never last

to drop all services & go strictly smartphone is impossible to do without streaming the shyt out of a whole bunch of data & knowing the way companies meter & throttle should have been an indication

at minimum, you need a smartphone with WiFi and a home internet connection, you can still roll without a landline & cable

use your 4G data when away from work and home and once you're in the office/home have your phone immediately connect to the wifi and you completely eliminate any data usage from your mobile network
If no one comes from the future to stop you from doing it, then how bad of a decision can it really be?
