Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread

Sardis, the first graph was from the OMB. This one is identical and comes from the CBO. http://www.npr.org/news/graphics/2010/01/gr-deficit-624.gif tick, first, your graph is a couple years outdated. Second, it's only referring to our debt that is held by the public and not including debt held by o...

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread

Sardis - a chart of U.S. public debt% vs gdp - notice how it began a dramatic climb during the first term of Reagan, and peaked at the end of Clintons first term, and the steep decline throughout that 2nd Clinton term (down to near 30%), and then the march upwards beginning in '01 http://www.edinfo...

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread

You can't compare today's situation with back in 1994. Debt as a percentage of gdp before Clinton came in was about 65%. He left with it about 58% in 2001. (I don't know where Owlman gets his 30%). Plus Clinton and the R's back then did not have the immediate future issue of medicare, like we do now...

or you significantly raise the age of retirement to 72 + starting with those who are currently 55, which we have to do. As Dora has pointed out, we don't "have" to do it. Right now, it's 67 for those born after 1960. Jumping the retirement age 7 years for those less with 10 years left to ...

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread

That's because I'm not trying to balance the budget over one year, and recognize that politically, we aren't cutting medicare much at all over the next 20 years. With that political reality, the goal is not to have a balance of zero but to move towards having more income than outgo in the next 20 y...

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread

That all sounds nice and good, but can you quantify those proposals? The additional tax revenues you propose only bring an additional 200 Billion or so a year. You also don't seem to make significant cuts to medicare. You can set the wealthy tax rate to 100% and still not cover what is potentially n...

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread

How much does Owlman say we need to raise taxes for this 20 year phase-out plan. Pre-Bush?, more? Does Owlman really think we have 20 years to balance the budget? Does he think that will build confidence in American business community?

Sardis, in my liberal circles, I don't know of any women who opted for single parenthood in order to benefit from these programs. Personally, I think women who benefit from such programs should abstain from sex. In wealthy and middle class liberal circles I won't dispute you, but with the poor it's...

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread

Sardis, I would put my knowledge of the Bible up against most true believers. My love of the Book of Leviticus is well known. I will look for any chance to discuss the high comedy therein (as well as select readings from Exodus, Genesis, Kings and a few others - it's great reading). I ask that you ...
