Re: Baseball
Losing to AJ Burnett with the season on the line? Devastating. And the story today is "Burnett was great!" Really? I just thought the Tigers missed a gang of opportunities to get to him early and often more so than Burnett was any good. Plus, Granderson pretty much saved his ass.

Re: College Football
Another tough week coming up for survivor pools. Have used NO, Pittsburgh, Houston, and San Diego. Do I go out on a limb and take the Colts at home against the Chiefs?

Re: Baseball
There are times where Verlander seems mortal (first inning last night), but then there are times where he goes through a lineup full of mashers (@ innings 4, 5, 6) and makes them look like little leaguers. Thankfully, there was more of the latter rather than the former last night.

If it's the Palmer of the last two seasons, I wouldn't even give up that much.

Re: College Football
This loss today for my Birds were do to pool securing of the football...and a rookie kicker missing chippies... Hey, if we're the Miami Heat of the NFL, it's only apropo. Miami started 8 - 9 themselves. ESPN did a piece on David Akers during Countdown yesterday that basically made Andy Reid look li...

Re: Baseball
Obviously jinxing the Tigers by even posting it, but the Yankees haven't won a divisional series against a team not named the Twins since 2001.

Re: Baseball
Whether he is or he isn't, he at least should be. Granderson is a good guy, but no way does his "slash line" stack up to any of Ellsbury, Bautista, or Cabrera. To me, Bautista was clearly the best player in the AL this year, but his team wasn't very good. Cabrera is in the top three league...

AL or NL? I'm going to guess some Red Sox or Yankees player win the AL version. NL should be Matt Kemp, but probably won't.Jungle Rat wrote:Probable MVP?

There's a stat: The Brewers won more home games (57) than the Astros won regular, old games (56) this season.

Re: Baseball
I don't see why more fools aren't jumping on the Tiggers bandwagon. Probable MVP in Cabrera, best pitcher in baseball, and a manager who completely sucks at his job yet smokes like a chimney in the clubhouse tunnel betwixt innings. What else could you want in a playoff team?

Re: Baseball
Bartman's an easy person to blame. That being said, if Bartman isn't in that seat, someone else is there and probably does the exact, same thing. Or the guy next to Bartman who's also reaching for the ball knocks it out of Alou's glove. EIther way, the Cubs had another game and a half to not blow th...

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
Well, that and there are just a lot more people who end up attending VPI than UVa. VPI's enrollment is like twice that of the University of Virginia.

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
That was probably when VPI stunk. Trust me, there are many, many more Virginia Tech fans in the commonwealth now than there are UVa. I presume our resident Marylander can corroborate this assertion.

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
Owlman clearly hasn't read the NYT: http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/19/the-geography-of-college-football-fans-and-realignment-chaos/ One outside-the-box target: Virginia Tech. In addition to its natural (and quite avid) fan base in western Virginia, it also has some reach into Washington, D...

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
Stick to Rice and (sometimes) Duke, owlman. VPI doesn't have much following in most of Virginia? When were you in the state last, like 1986? Virginia Tech is all over the place in the DC area and that's like five hours from campus. Much bigger football following than UVa, and it's not even close.

Re: College Football
Tough week for survivor pools. Have to go against the grain at some point to win these things, but is this week the time to do that? Carolina at Chicago seems to be an obvious pick, but Chicago might not be that good. Always hate picking road games, but NO at Jacksonville also has some appeal.

Re: Baseball
Tigers have owned the Rays this season. Moreover, they have virtually nobody who can hit in that lineup. Plus, I'll take two home games with Verlander and Fister (or Scherzer) versus the Rays and then a road trip to cavernous Devil Dog Stadium than the opposite at Yankee Stadium.

Re: College Football
I think it's safe to say after watching the last two nights of prime time football that none of the Cowboys, Redskins, Steelers, or Colts are winning the Super Bowl anytime soon.
That being said, Tampa over the Colts should be a popular survivor pool pick this week.

Re: Baseball
I know that folks keep referring to the Rays as "dangerous," but if I'm the Tigers or RAngers, I'd much rather play them than the Red Sox.
